About positioning methods Maps displays your location on the map using GPS, A- GPS, or cell ID based positio ning. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system used for calculating your location. Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is a netw ork service that sends you GPS data, imp roving th e sp eed and accuracy o f the positionin g. When you use Maps for t he first time, you are prom pted to define an intern et ac cess point to download map informat ion or us e A-GP S. indicates the availability of the satellite signals. One bar is one satelli te. When the device is searching for satellite signals, the bar is yellow. When there is enough data available to calculate your location, the b ar turns green. The more green bars, the more reliable the location calculation. The Globa l Positioning System (GPS) is operated by the government of the U nited States, which is solely responsible for its accuracy and maintenance. The accuracy of location data can be affected by adjustments to GPS satellites made by the United States government and is subject t o change with the United States De partment of Defe nse civi l GPS polic y and the Federal Radionavig ation Plan. Accuracy ca n also be affected by poo r satellite geometry. Availabilit y and quality of GPS signals may be affected b y your location, buildings, natural obstacles, and weather conditions. GPS signals may not be available inside buildings or underground and may be im paired by materials such a s concrete and metal. GPS should not be used for pr ecise location measurement, and you sh ould never rely solely on location data from the GPS receiver and cellular radio networks for positi on ing or navigation. The trip meter has limite d accuracy, an d rounding errors may oc cur. Accura cy can also be affect ed by availability and quality of GPS signals. With cell ID based positioning, the position is determined through the ant enna tower your mobile device is currently connec ted to. Depending on the availabl e positioning method, the accuracy of positioning may vary from a few metre s to several kilometres.
