Batter y door - open to inser t 4 X 1.5 batter ies, type R20 or D-cells Po w er supply Whenever con venient, use the power cord if y ou want to conser ve batter y life. Make sure y ou remo ve the plug from the set and wall outlet before inser ting batter ies. Batteries (not included) ⢠Inser t 4 batter ies, type R20 or D-cells (preferably alkaline) with the cor rect polar ity . (Se e 1 ) Batteries contain chemical substances , so the y should be disposed of properly . ⢠Incor rect use of batter ies can cause electrolyte leakage and will corrode the compar tment or cause the batter ies to bur st: ⢠Do not mix batter y types: e .g. alkaline with carbon zinc . Only use batteries of the same type for the set. ⢠When inser ting new batter ies, do not tr y to mix old batter ies with the new ones. ⢠Remov e the batteries if the set is not to be used for a long time.
Po w er Supply General Operation/Radio Using A C po w er 1 Check if the pow er voltage, as shown on the type plate located on the bottom of the set , cor responds to y our local pow er supply . If it does not, consult y our dealer or ser vice center . 2 If your set is equipped with a v oltage selector , adjust the selector so that it matches with the local mains. 3 Connect the pow er cord to the AC IN ~ inlet and the wall socket. The pow er cord is now connected and ready f or use . 4 To switch the set off completely , withdr aw the pow er cord from the wall socket. ⢠Disconnect the pow er cord from the wall socket to protect y our set dur ing hea vy thunder stor ms. Helpful hints : To av oid unnecessar y ener gy consumption, always adjust the Sour ce selector to T APE (OFF ) after using the set. Also check that the tape deck keys are released. The type plate is located on the bottom of the set. G eneral operation Switching on and off and selecting functions 1 To switch on, push the Source selector slider to T APE or RADIO as desired. 2 To switch off, push the Source selector to T APE and check the cassette k eys are released. Helpful hints: â To change from T APE to RADIO , or when you are switching off the set: fir st, make sure you press the ST OP â¢EJECT 9 / k ey to end playback and all the cassette keys are released. Adjusting volume ⢠Adjust the volume with the V OLUME control. Radio r eception 1 Adjust the sour ce selector to RADIO . 2 Adjust the band selector to select y our desired wa veband, MW , SW or FM . 3 Tu r n TUNING to tune to a station. â¢In SW, tur n T ONE f or precise tuning. 4 To switch off the r adio, adjust the source selector to T APE position. To impro ve r adio reception: ⢠For FM and SW, extend and tur n the telescopic antenna for best reception. Reduce its length if the signal is too strong. ⢠For MW, the set uses a built-in antenna. Direct this antenna for best reception b y tur ning the whole set. Cassette pla yback 1 Push the Sour ce selector slider to T APE 2 Press ST OP â¢EJECT 9 / to open the cassette holder and inser t a cassette and close the deck. 3 Press PLA Y 1 to star t playback. 4 To pause playback press PA USE ; . To resume , press the key again. 5 By pressing F .FWD/REWIND 5 or 6 , fast forwading/ rewinding of the tape is possible in both directions. T o stop fast winding, press 9 / / . 6 To stop the tape , press 9 / / . Helpful hints: â Dur ing playback, the keys are automatically released at the end of a tape and the set is switched off (unless PA USE ; mode has been activated.) â Dur ing f ast forw arding/rewinding, the keys will not be released at the end of a tape. T o switch off the set, make sure the cassette k eys are also released. General information on r ecording ⢠Recording is per missible insofar as cop yright or . other r ights of third par ties are not infr inged. ⢠For recording, use only NORMAL type cas- settes (IEC type I) on which the tabs hav e not yet been brok en. This deck is not suited f or recording on CHR OME (IEC II) or MET AL (IEC IV) type cassettes. ⢠The best recording level is set automaticall y . Alter ing the V OLUME will not affect the recording. â¢T o protect a tape from accidental er asure , break out the tabs. If y ou wish to record again, cov er the tabs with a piece of adhesiv e tape . Recording fr om the Radio 1 Select RADIO source . 2 T une to the desired r adio station (see Radio r eception ). 3 P ress 9 / / to open the cassette holder . Inser t a blank tape and close the deck. 4 P ress REC 0 to star t recording. 5 For br ief inter r uptions press ; . To resume recording, press ; again. 6 To stop recording, press 9 / / . Making y our recor ding 1 Select T APE source . 2 Follows steps 3-4 under Recor ding fr om the Radio . 3 Speak towards the b uilt-in microphone MIC (see 1). 4 Follows steps 6-7 under Recor ding fr om the Radio . Cassette Recor der The making of unauthorized copies of cop y-pr otected material, including com- puter pr ogrammes, files, broadcasts and sound recor dings, ma y be an infring e- ment of cop yrights and constitute a criminal offence. This equipment should not be used for such purposes.
Maintenance & safety Ta pe deck maintenance To ensure quality recording and playback of the tape deck, clean par ts A , B and C as shown, once a month. Use a cotton bud slightly moistened with alcohol or a special head cleaning fluid to clean the deck. 1 Open the cassette holder by pressing 9 / . 2 Press 1 and clean the roller C . 3 P ress ; and clean the heads A , and the capstan B . 4 After cleaning, press 9 / . â Cleaning of the heads can also be done by playing a cleaning cassette through once. Safety information ⢠Place the set on a flat, hard and stable surface so that the system does not tilt. ⢠Where the MAINS plug or an appliance cou- pler is used as the disconnet device , the dis- connet device shall remain readily operable . ⢠Do not expose the set, batter ies to humidity , r ain, sand or excessive heat caused b y heating equipment or direct sunlight. ⢠The appar atus shall not be exposed to dr ipping or splashing. ⢠Adequate ventilation with a minim um gap of 15cm (6 inches) between the v entilation holes and sur rounding surfaces is necessar y to prevent heat b uild-up. ⢠Do not cov er the v entilation openings with items such as newspaper s, table-cloths, cur tains, etc . ⢠No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the appar atus. ⢠No naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, should be placed on the appar atus. ⢠The mechanical par ts of the set contain self-lubr icating bear ings and m ust not be oiled or lubr icated. â¢T o clean the set, use a dr y cloth. Do not use any cleaning agents containing alcohol, ammonia, benzene or abrasives as these may harm the housing. Hearing Safety Listen at a moderate volume . ⢠Using headphones at a high volume can impair your hearing. This product can pro- duce sounds in decibel r anges that may cause hear ing loss for a normal per son, even for exposure less than a minute. The higher deci- bel r anges are offered f or those that may ha ve already experienced some hear ing loss. ⢠Sound can be deceiving. Over time your hear ing "comfor t level" adapts to higher vol- umes of sound. So after prolonged listening, what sounds "nor mal" can actually be loud and har mful to y our hear ing. T o guard against this, set your v olume to a safe lev el before y our hearing adapts and leav e it there . To establish a saf e volume le vel: ⢠Set your v olume control at a lo w setting. ⢠Slowl y increase the sound until you can hear it comfor tably and clear ly , without distor tion. Listen for r easonable periods of time: ⢠Prolonged exposure to sound, even at nor- mally "saf e" levels, can also cause hear ing loss. ⢠Be sure to use your equipment reasonab ly and take appropriate breaks. Be sure to observe the follo wing guidelines when using y our head- phones. ⢠Listen at reasonable v olumes for reasonab le per iods of time . ⢠Be careful not to adjust the volume as y our hear ing adapts. ⢠Do not tur n up the volume so high that y ou can't hear what's around you. â¢Y ou should use caution or tempor ar ily discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations. ⢠Do not use headphones while oper ating a motor ized v ehicle , cycling, skateboarding, etc .; it may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in many areas.
