Po w er Supply Whenever conßv enient, use the pow er supply cord if you want to conser ve batter y life. Make sure y ou remo ve the plug from the set and wall outlet before inser ting batter ies. Batteries (not included) 1 Open the batter y door and inser t 6 batter ies, type R-14, UM-2 or C-cells, (preferably alkaline) with the cor rect polar ity as indicated by the " " and " – " symbols inside the com- par tment. (See 2 ) 2 Replace the batter y door , making sure the bat- ter ies are firmly and correctly in place . The set is now ready to operate . Batteries contain chemical substances , so the y should be disposed of properly . • Incor rect use of batter ies can cause electrolyte leakage and cor rode the compar tment or cause the batter ies to bur st : • Do not mix batter y types: e .g. alkaline with car- bon zinc . Only use batter ies of the same type f or the set. • When inser ting new batteries , do not tr y to mix old batter ies with the new ones. • Remove the batteries if the set is not to be used f or a long time. Po w er Supply General Operation / T uner Using A C po w er W ARNING: Alw ays ensure that you have completely switched off the set, before you change or disconnect po wer supply . 1 Check if the pow er voltage, as shown on the type plate located on the bottom of the set, cor responds to your local po wer suppl y . If it does not, consult your dealer or ser vice cen- ter . 2 Connect the pow er cord to the AC MAINS~ inlet and the wall socket. The set is now connected and ready f or use . 3 To switch the set off completely , withdraw the pow er cord from the wall socket. 4 Install the unit near the A C outlet and where the A C power plug can be easil y reached. • Disconnect the pow er cord from the wall socket to protect y our set dur ing hea vy thun- der stor ms. Children could ser iously injure themselves as the free end of the cab le may still be live if onl y the connector is remov ed from the MAINS socket at the back of the unit. The type plate is located on the bottom of the set. Helpful hints: – To avoid unnecessar y ener gy consumption, always adjust the Sour ce selector to OFF after using the set. G eneral operation Switching on and off and selecting the function 1 To select your sound source , adjust the Sour ce selector to: CD , or TUNER . 2 To switch off the set, adjust the Sour ce selector to OFF position. Adjusting volume and sound 1 Adjust volume b y using the V OLUME con- trol. 2 Adjust sound effect b y using the DBB con- trol. Radio r eception 1 Adjust the Sour ce selector to TUNER . 2 Adjust BAND to select your desired wa v e- band, MW or FM . 3 Tu r n TUNING to tune to a station. Helpful hints: To impro ve radio r eception • For FM, extend, incline and tur n the telescop- ic antenna for best reception and reduce its length if the signal is too strong. • For MW , the set uses a built-in antenna. Pla ying a CD • This CD play er plays Audio Discs including CD-Recordables (CD-R) and CD-Rewritables (CD-R W). • MP3, CD-ROM, CD-I, CD V , VCD , D VD or computer CDs are not possible f or playback. IMPOR T ANT! CDs encoded with cop yright pr otection technologies by some record companies ma y be unplay able b y this product. 1 Adjust the Sour ce selector to CD . 2 Open the CD door , and inser t a CD with the pr inted side facing up , then press the CD door gently to close. ➜ Display sho ws -- , and later the total n umber of tr acks. (See 3 ) 3 Press 2; to star t playback. 4 To pause playback, press 2; . ➜ Display: 2 flashes. (See 4 ) 5 To resume , press 2; again. 6 To stop CD playback, press 9 . Helpful hints: CD play also stops when: – you open the CD door ; – you select TUNER or OFF sound source; – the CD has reached the end. Selecting a differ ent track • Press ∞ / § once or repeatedly until the desired tr ack number appear s in the display . • In the pause/stop position, press 2; to star t playback. Finding a passa ge within a track 1 Dur ing playback, press and hold ∞ or § . ➜ The CD is play ed at high speed and with reduced volume. 2 When you recogniz e the passage y ou want, release ∞ or § to resume nor mal playback. Pr o gramming track num- bers Y ou may store up to 20 tracks in the desired sequence . If you lik e , store any track more than once . 1 In the stop position, press PROG to activate progr amming. ➜ Display: PROG and 00 flash. (See 5 ) 2 Press ∞ or § to select your desired track n umber . 3 Press PROG to store the desired tr ack n umber . ➜ Displa y: PROG and 00 flash for y ou to progr am the next tr ack. 4 Repeat steps 2 to 3 to select and store all desired tr acks in this way . ➜ If you attempt to store more than 20 tr acks, no tr ack can be selected and the display sho ws - - - - . 5 To play y our progr am, press 2 / ; . Helpful hints : – When playback of your pro gr am comes to the stop position, your set returns to normal playback. T o r e-enter pro gram mode , press PR OG in the stop position. Re vie wing the pro gram In the stop position, press PROG repeatedly to see your stored tracks. Erasing a pr ogram Y ou can er ase the contents of the memor y by: – in the stop position, press PR OG to enter progr am mode , and then press 9 . – selecting TUNER or OFF ; – opening the CD door ; Differ ent pla y modes: REPEA T . and SHUFFLE ( See 6 , 7 ) REPEA T Y ou can play the current tr ack or the whole disc repeatedly , and combine REPEA T modes with PROG (PROGRAM) . REP – plays the cur rent tr ack continuously . REP ALL – repeats the entire CD/progr am 1 To select play mode, press REPEA T once or more . ➜ The display sho ws REP icon or REP ALL icon. 2 Press 2; to star t playback in the stop/ pause position. 3 To retur n to nor mal playback, press REPEA T repeatedly until the modes are no longer dis- play ed . – Y ou can also press 9 to cancel your pla y mode . SHUFFLE Yo u can play all the tracks in r andom order . 1 In the stop position, press SHUFFLE to switch on shuffle play . ➜ Display sho ws SHUF icon . 2 To switch off shuffle play , press 9 . Helpful hints: – Dur ing the shuffle play , when REP function is selected, the set plays the cur rent shuffled track repeatedly , or when the REP ALL function is selected, it repeats the shuffle play of the entire CD . CD pla y er and CD handling • If the CD play er cannot read CDs correctly , use a cleaning CD to clean the lens before taking the set to repair . • Never touch the lens of the CD pla yer! • Sudden changes in the sur rounding temper ature can cause condensation on the lens of your CD pla y er . Playing a CD is then not possible. Do not attempt to clean the lens but lea ve the set in a warm environment until the moisture evapor ates. •A lwa ys close the CD door to av oid dust on the lens. •T o clean the CD , wipe in a str aight line from the center towards the edge using a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use cleaning agents as they may damage the disc. • Never write on a CD or attach any sticker s to it. Safety inf ormation • Place the set on a flat, hard and stable surface so that the system does not tilt. • Where the MAINS plug or an appliance cou- pler is used as the disconnect device , the dis- connet device shall remain readily operable . • Do not expose the set, batter ies, CDs to humidity , r ain, sand or excessive heat caused by heating equipment or direct sunlight. • The appar atus shall not be exposed to dr ip- ping or splashing. • Adequate ventilation with a minim um gap of 15cm (6 inches) between the v entilation holes and sur rounding surfaces is necessar y to prevent heat b uild-up. • Do not cov er the ventilation openings with items such as newspaper s, table-cloths, cur- tains, etc . • No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the appar atus. • No naked flame sources, such as lighted can- dles, should be placed on the appar atus. • The mechanical par ts of the set contain self- lubr icating bear ings and must not be oiled or lubr icated. •T o clean the set, use a dr y cloth. Reconnect after a f ew seconds -- , Er or 01 indication – No CD inser ted • Inser t a CD – CD badly scratched or dirty • Replace/clean CD , see Maintenance – Laser lens steamed up •W ait until lens has cleared – CD-R/CD-R W is blank or not finalized • Use a finaliz ed CD-R/CD-R W or suitable CD Audio disc only Note: Make sure the CD is not encoded with cop y- right protection technolo gies , as some do not conform to the Compact Disc standard. The CD skips tracks – CD damaged or dir ty • Replace or clean CD – Program /shuffle is active • Exit progr am/ shuffle mode Note: A CD badly scratch or dirty may result in improper oper ation . Tr oubleshooting If a fault occur s, fir st check the points listed below bef ore taking the set for repair .
