This equipment should not be used for such purposes. Impor tant notes for users in the U .K. Mains plug This apparatus is fitted with an approved 13 Amp plug. T o change a fuse in this type of plug proceed as follows: 1. Remove fuse co ver and fuse . 2. Fix new fuse which should be a BS1362 3 Amp , A.S.T .A. or BSI appro ved type . 3. Refit the fuse co ver . If the fitted plug is not suitable f or your socket outlets, it should be cut off and an appropriate plug fitted in its place. If the mains plug contains a fuse, this should ha ve a value of 3 Amp. If a plug without a fuse is used, the fuse at the distribution board should not be greater than 3 Amp. Note: The severed plug must be disposed of to a void a possible shock hazard should it be inser ted into a 13 Amp socket elsewhere. How to connect a plug The wires in the mains lead are coloured with the following code: blue = neutral (N), brown = live (L). As these colours may not correspond with the colour mar kings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows: • Connect the blue wire to the terminal mar ked N or coloured b lack. • Connect the brown wire to the terminal mar ked L or coloured red. • Do not connect either wire to the ear th terminal in the plug, marked E (or e) or coloured green (or green and yellow). Before replacing the plug cov er , make cer tain that the cord grip is clamped over the sheath of the lead - not simply ov er the two wires. Copyright in the U .K. English Controls Po w er Supply Po w er supply Whenever conv enient, use the mains lead if y ou want to conser v e batter y life. Make sure y ou remov e the plug from the set and wall outlet before inser ting batteries. Batteries (not included) Main set (See 2 ) • Inser t 6 batteries, type R-14, UM2 or C-cells (pref er ably alkaline) with the correct polarity . Remote control ( See 2 ) • Inser t 2 batteries, type AA, R06 or UM3 (preferably alkaline). • Incorrect use of batter ies can cause electrolyte leakage and will corrode the compar tment or cause the batteries to bur st: • Do not mix batter y types: e.g. alkaline with carbon zinc. Only use batter ies of the same type for the set. • When inser ting new batteries, do not tr y to mix old batteries with the new ones. • Remove the batteries if the set is not to be used for a long time. Batteries contain chemical substances, so they should be disposed of pr operly. Using AC Mains 1 Check if the mains voltage, as shown on the type plate located on the bottom of the set, cor responds to your local mains supply . If it does not, consult your dealer or ser vice center . 2 Connect the mains lead to the AC ~ inlet and the wall socket. The mains lead is now connected and ready for use. 3 To switch the set off completely , withdraw the mains lead from the wall socket. 4 Install the unit near the A C outlet and where the AC pow er plug can be easily reached. • Disconnect the mains lead from the wall socket to protect your set during heavy thunderstor ms. The type plate is located on the bot- tom of the set . Helpful hints : – To av oid unnecessar y ener gy consumption, always adjust the Sour ce selector to T APE /OFF after using the set. Basic operation Switching on and off and selecting functions 1 To switch on, push the Source selector slider to CD , TUNER, or T APE/OFF as desired. 2 To switch off, push the Source selector slider to T APE/OFF and check the cassette k eys are released. Helpful hints: – To change from T APE to TUNER or CD function, or when you are switching off the set: first, make sure you press the tape ST OP •EJECT 9 / k ey to end playback and all the cassette keys are released. Adjusting volume and sound Adjust the sound with the V OLUME and BASS BOOST controls. Radio reception 1 Adjust the Sour ce selector to TUNER . 2 Adjust BAND to select your desired waveband, MW or FM ST . (stereo) 3 Tu r n TUNING to tune to a station. To impro ve radio reception: • For FM, extend and turn the telescopic antenna for best reception. Reduce its length if the signal is too strong. To tune to a weak FM station, adjust BAND to FM (mono). • For MW, the set uses a built-in antenna. Direct this antenna for best reception by turning the whole set. About MP3 The music compression technology MP3 (MPEG1 Audio Layer 3) significantly reduce the digital data of an audio CD while main- taining CD quality sound. • Getting MP3 files: y ou can either down- load legal music files from the internet to y our computer hard disc, or create such files by conv er ting audio CD files in your com- puter through appropriate encoder software . (128kbps bit rate or higher is recommended f or MP3 files.) • Creating a MP3 CD: bu rn the m usic files from your computer hard disc on a CDR or CDRW using y our CD burner . Helpful hints: – Make sure that the file names of the MP3 files end with .mp3. – T otal number of music files and albums: around 350 (with a typical file name length of 20 characters) – The length of file names affects the number of tracks for playback. With shor ter file names, more files can be burned on a disc . Basic Operation/T uner CD/MP3 pla yer CD/MP3 Pla yer Pla ying a disc This player pla ys Audio Discs including CD- R/ CD-RW , and MP3 CD. Do not tr y to play a CD-ROM, CD-I, CDV , VCD , DVD or computer CD . IMPOR T ANT! • F or a disc with CD Audio tracks and MP3 files, only the CD Audio tracks will be played . • This player does not support UDF for- mat CD. 1 Lift the CD door at LIFT T O OPEN . Inser t a CD with the printed facing up and press the CD door gently . 2 Push the Source selector slider to CD/MP3 . ➜ Display shows --- and later , the total num- ber of tracks. 3 Press PLA Y/P AUSE 2/ ; to star t playback. ➜ Audio CD: cur rent track number appears MP3: The display shows current track n umber in the album (See 3 ) 4 To pause playback, press PLA Y/P AUSE 2 / ; (See 4). Press PLA Y/P AUSE 2/ ; again to resume play . 5 To stop playback, press ST OP 9 . Helpful hints: CD play will also stop when: – the CD door is opened – the CD has reached the end – you select tuner or tape source. Selecting a different track • Press NEXT , PREVIOUS § , ∞ once or repeatedly until the desired track number appears in the display . F or MP3: fir st press ALBUM /- once or more to find your alb um. ➜ The display shows ALB UM and current album number briefly (See 5 ) • In the pause/stop position, press PLA Y/P AUSE 2/ ; to star t playback.. Finding a passage within a track 1 During playback, press and hold § or ∞ . ➜ The CD is played at high speed and lo w volume. 2 When you recognize the passage y ou want, release § or ∞ to resume normal playback. Different pla y modes: REPEA T and RANDOM ( See 6 - 8 ) REP . – plays the current track continuously REP . ALL – repeats the entire disc/ program RAND – tracks of the entire disc are played in random order F or MP3 only: REP . ALBUM – all tracks of cur rent album play repeatedly . 1 To select play mode , press MODE once or more. ➜ The display shows the selected mode. 2 Press PLA Y/P AUSE 2/ ; to star t playback. if in the stop position. 3 To select nor mal playback, press MODE repeatedly until the various modes are no longer displayed. – Y ou can also press STOP 9 to cancel your play modes..
Pro gramming track num- bers Y ou may store up to 20 tracks (for MP3: 10 tracks) in the desired sequence . If you like, store any track more than once . F or Audio CD: 1 In the stop position, press PROG to acti- vate programming. ➜ Display: PR OG and P01 flash, indicating the star t of the program. (See 9 ) 2 Press § or ∞ to select your desired track n umber . ➜ Display: PR OG and your desired tr ack n umber flash. 3 Press PROG to store the desired tr ack n umber . ➜ D isplay: PR OG and P02 flash, indicating the next program location available. 4 Repeat steps 2 to 3 to select and store all desired tracks in this way . ➜ Display shows PROG ---after 20 tracks are stored 5 To play your programme, press PLA Y/P AUSE 2/ ; . F or MP3: 1 In the stop position, press PROG to acti- vate programming. ➜ Display: PR OG and P01 flash, indicating the star t of the program. 2 If necessar y , press ALBUM /- to select another album ➜ Display: ALB UM and selected album number (See 0) 3 Press § or ∞ to select your desired track n umber . ➜ Display: the selected track number in current album 4 Press PROG to store the desired tr ack n umber . ➜ D isplay: PR OG and P02 flash, indicating the next program location available. 5 Repeat steps 2 to 4 to select and store all desired tracks in this way . ➜ Display shows PROG --- after 10 tracks are stored. 6 To play your programme, press PLA Y/P AUSE 2/ ; . Helpful hints: – When the PROG or RAND mode is active , use of the ALBUM /- k eys are void . Revie wing the program In the stop position, press PROG repeatedly until you enter the empty program location ➜ The display shows the occupied program locations ➜ After the empty program location is displayed, all the stored tr acks appear in sequence. MP3 only: ALBUM and an album n umber appear , then a stored track number in the album is display ed. Helpful hints: – Display shows P01 if no track isprogrammed. Erasing the program Y ou can erase the contents of the memor y by: – pressing ST OP 9 (twice during playback or once in the stop position); – selecting TUNER or T APE sound source; – opening the disc door ; ➜ Display: PR OG disappear s. CD/MP3 Pla yer Cassette Recorder Cassette pla yback 1 Push the Source selector slider to T APE 2 Press ST OP •EJECT 9 / / to open the cassette holder and inser t a cassette and close the deck. 3 Press PLA Y 1 to star t playback. 4 To pause playback press PA USE ; . To resume, press the k ey again. 5 To stop the tape, press 9 / / . F ast forwarding/r ewinding 1 Press F .FWD/REW 5 or 6 unti you reach your desired passage. 2 Press 9 / / to stop fastforwarding/rewinding. Helpful hints: – During playback, the keys are automatically released at the end of a tape and the set is switched off (unless PA USE ; mode has been activated.) – During fast forwarding/rewinding, the keys will not be released at the end of a tape. T o switch off the set, make sure the cassette keys are also released.. General information on recor ding • Recording is permissible insofar as copyright or . other rights of third par ties are not infringed. • For recording, use only NORMAL type cas- settes (IEC type I) on which the tabs have not yet been broken. This deck is not suited f or recording on CHROME (IEC II) o r MET AL (IEC IV) type cassettes. • The best recording level is set automatically . Altering the VOLUME or BASS BOOST will not affect the recording. •T o protect a tape from accidental erasure , break out the tabs. If you wish to record again, cover the tabs with a piece of adhesiv e tape. Recording from the CD Pla yer 1 Select CD/MP3 source . 2 I nser t a CD and if desired, progr am track n umbers. 3 P ress 9 / / to open the cassette holder . Inser t a blank tape and close the deck. 4 P ress REC 0 to star t recording. 5 Press PLA Y/P AUSE 2; to star t CD play- back. 6 For brief inter ruptions press ; .T o resume recording, press ; again. 7 To stop recording, press 9 / / . Maintenance & safety (see !) CD play er and CD handling • If the CD player cannot read CDs correctly , use a cleaning CD to clean the lens before taking the set to repair . • The lens of the CD player should nev er be touched! • Sudden changes in the surrounding temperature can cause condensation on the lens of your CD play er . Pla ying a CD is then not possible. Do not attempt to clean the lens but leav e the set in a war m environ- ment until the moisture evaporates. •A lwa ys close the CD-tape door to avoid dust on the lens. •T o clean the CD , wipe in a straight line from the center towards the edge using a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use cleaning agents as they may damage the disc. • Never write on a CD or attach any stickers to it. Ta pe deck maintenance To ensure quality recording and playback of the tape deck, clean par ts A , B and C as shown, once a month. Use a cotton bud slightly moistened with alcohol or a special head cleaning fluid to clean the deck. 1 Open the cassette holder by pressing 9 / . 2 Press 1 and clean the roller C . 3 P ress ; and clean the heads A , and the capstan B . 4 After cleaning, press 9 / . ➜ Cleaning of the heads can also be done by playing a cleaning cassette through once. Safety information • Place the set on a flat, hard and stable sur- face so that the system does not tilt. • Do not expose the set, batteries, CDs to humidity , rain, sand or excessive heat caused by heating equipment or direct sunlight. • The apparatus shall not be exposed to dr ip- ping or splashing. • Adequate ventilation with a minimum gap of 15cm (6 inches) between the ventilation holes and surrounding surfaces is necessar y to prevent heat build-up . • Do not cover the v entilation openings with items such as newspapers, tab le-cloths, cur- tains, etc. • No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the apparatus. • No naked flame sources, such as lighted can- dles, should be placed on the apparatus. • The mechanical par ts of the set contain self-lubricating bear ings and m ust not be oiled or lubricated. •T o clean the set, use a dr y cloth. Do not use any cleaning agents containing alcohol, ammonia, benzene or abrasives as these may harm the housing. No sound /pow er – V olume not adjusted • Adjust the VOLUME – Po wer cord not securely connected • Connect the AC pow er cord proper ly – Batteries dead/ incor rectly inserted • Inser t (fresh) batteries cor rectly – Headphones connected to the set • Disconnect headphones. Display does not function pr operly/ No r eaction to operation of any of the con- trols – Electrostatic discharge • Switch off and unplug the set. Reconnect after a f ew seconds Remote control does not function properly – Batteries exhausted/ incorrectly inserted • Inser t (fresh) batteries cor rectly – Distance/ angle between the set too large • Reduce the distance/ angle Sev ere radio hum or noise – Electrical interference: set too close to TV , VCR or computer • Increase the distance P oor radio reception – W eak radio signal • FM: Adjust the FM telescopic aerial no indication – No disc inserted • Inser t asuitable disc – CD badly scratched or dirty • Replace/ clean CD , see Maintenance & Safety – Laser lens steamed up •W ait until lens has cleared – CD-R/CD-R W is blank or not finalized • Use a finalized CD-R or CD-R W only Note: Make sure the CD is not encoded with Copyright pr otection technologies , as some do not conform to the Compact Disc stan- dard. The CD skips tracks – CD damaged or dirty • Replace or clean CD – PROG / RAND is active • Quit PROG / RAND mode Note: F or a disc with CD Audio tracks and MP3 files, only the CD Audio tracks will be played. The MP3-CD skips albums – CD contains non-MP3 file folders • Check your disc contains suitable f ile folder s. P oor cassette sound quality – Dust and dirt on the heads , etc . • Clean deck par ts, see Maintenance – Use of incompatible cassette types (MET AL or CHROME) • Only use NORMAL (IEC I ) for recording Recording does not work – Cassette tab(s) may be broken • Apply adhesive tape o ver the missing tab space Tr oubleshooting If a fault occurs, f ir st check the points listed below before taking the set f or repair . If you are unable to remedy a prob lem by following these hints, consult your dealer or ser vice centre. W ARNING: Do not open the set as there is a risk of electric shock. Under no circumstances should you try to repair the set your self, as this will invalidate the guar antee .
