Power Supply Whenever con venient, use the power suppl y cord if you want to conser ve batter y life . Make sure y ou remove the plug from the set and wall outlet before inser ting batteries. Batteries (not included) 1 Open the batter y door and inser t 6 batteries, type R20 , UM1 or D-cells , (preferably alkaline) with the cor rect polar ity as indicated by the " " and " â " symbols inside the compar tment. 2 Close the batter y door , making sure the batter ies are firmly and cor rectly in place . The set is now ready to operate . Batteries contain chemical substances, so they should be disposed of properly. ⢠Incor rect use of batter ies can cause electrolyte leakage and will cor rode the compar tment or cause the batter ies to bur st: ⢠Do not mix batter y types: e .g. alkaline with carbon zinc . Only use batter ies of the same type for the set. ⢠When inser ting new batter ies, do not tr y to mix old batter ies with the new ones. ⢠Remove the batteries if the set is not to be used for a long time. Using AC power WARNING: Always check you have completely switched off the set, before you change or disconnect power supply. 1 Check if the pow er voltage , as shown on the type plate located on the bottom of the set, cor responds to your local po wer supply . If it does not, consult your dealer or ser vice center . 2 Connect the pow er cord to the AC MAINS~ inlet and the wall socket. The set is now connected and ready f or use . 3 T o switch the set off completel y , withdr aw the pow er cord from the wall socket. 4 Install the unit near the A C outlet and where the A C pow er plug can be easily reached. ⢠Disconnect the pow er cord from the wall socket to protect y our set dur ing hea vy thunder stor ms. Children could ser iously injure themselves as the free end of the cab le may still be live if onl y the connector is remov ed from the MAINS socket at the back of the unit. The type plate is located on the bottom of the set. Helpful hints: â T o a void unnecessar y ener gy consumption, alwa ys adjust the Source selector to OFF after using the set. General operation Switching on and off and selecting the function 1 T o select your sound source, adjust the Source selector to: CD/USB, FM or MW . 2 T o switch off the set, adjust the Source selector to OFF position. 3 T o switch to MP3 LINK mode , connect an exter nal audio source to the MP3 LINK inlet. Helpful hints: ⢠The set switches to MP3 LINK mode automatically when an external audio source is connected, no matter the set is in CD/ USB, FM or MW mode . ⢠The MP3 LINK inlet is not for earphones. Radio reception 1 Adjust the Source selector to FM or MW . 2 Tu r n TUNING to tune to a station. To improve radio reception ⢠For FM, extend, incline and tur n the telescopic antenna for best reception. Reduce its length if the signal is too strong. ⢠For MW , the set uses a built-in antenna. Direct this antenna for best reception b y tur ning the whole set. About MP3 The music compression technology MP3 (MPEG1 Audio Lay er 3) significantl y reduce the digital data of an audio CD while maintaining CD quality sound. ⢠Getting MP3 files: you can either do wnload legal music f iles from the inter net to your computer hard disc , or create such files by conv er ting audio CD files in y our computer through appropr iate encoder software . (128kbps bit r ate or higher is recommended for MP3 f iles.) ⢠Creating an MP3 CD: bur n the music f iles from your computer hard disc on a CDR or CDR W using your CD b ur ner . Helpful Hints: â Make sure that the f ile names of the MP3 files end with .mp3 . â T otal number of music f iles and albums: around 400 (with a typical file name length of 20 char acter s) â The length of file names affects the n umber of tr acks for pla yback. With shor ter file names, more files can be b ur ned on a disc . Playing a disc ⢠This CD play er plays Audio Discs including CD-Recordables (CD-R), CD-Rewr itables (CD-R W) and MP3/WMA CD . ⢠CD-ROM, CD-I, CD V , VCD , D VD or computer CDs are not possible f or playback. IMPORTANT! ⢠CDs encoded with copyright protection technologies by some record companies ma y be unplay able b y this product. ⢠DRM-protected WMA disc is not suppor t. 1 Adjust the Source selector to CD/USB . 2 Press CD/USB once or more to enter the CD mode . 3 Open the CD door , and inser t a CD with the pr inted side facing up, then press the CD door gently to close. â Display shows --- , and later the total number of tracks. (See 2 ) 4 Press 2; to star t playback. 5 T o pause playback, press 2; . â Display: 2 flashes. (See 3 ) 6 T o resume , press 2; again. 7 T o stop playback, press 9 . Helpful hints: CD play will also stop when: â you open the CD door ; â you select USB , FM , MW or OFF ; â the CD has reached the end. Selecting a different track ⢠Press â / ç once or repeatedly until the desired tr ack number appear s in the display . For MP3/WMA-CD: Fir st press ALB /- once or more to select your alb um. ⢠In the pause/stop position, press 2; to star t playback. Finding a passage within a track 1 Dur ing playback, press and hold â or ç . â The CD is pla yed at high speed and with reduced volume. 2 When you recogniz e the passage you want, release â or ç to resume nor mal playback. Helpful hints: â When your searching reaches the end of the last tr ack, the CD goes to stop mode . Programming track numbers Y ou may store up to 20 tracks in the desired sequence . If you lik e , store any tr ack more than once . 1 In the stop position, press PROG to activate progr amming. â Display: PROG and P01 flash. (See 4 ) 2 Press â or ç to select your desired track number . For MP3/WMA-CD: first press ALB /- once or more to select your alb um. 3 Press PROG to store the desired tr ack number . â Display: PROG and P02 flash for y ou to progr am the next tr ack. 4 Repeat steps 2 to 3 to select and store all desired tr acks in this way . â If you attempt to store more than 20 tr acks, no tr ack can be selected and the display sho ws ---. 5 T o play y our progr am, press 2 / ; . Helpful hints : â When playback of your program comes to the stop position, your set will return to normal playback. To re-enter program mode, press PROG in the stop position. Reviewing the program In the stop position, press PROG repeatedly to see your stored tracks. Different play modes: REPEAT and SHUFFLE (See 5 , 6 ) Y ou can select and change the var ious play modes before or during playback, and combine REPEA T modes with PROG (PROGRAM). â plays the current tr ack continuously . For MP3: ALB â plays all tracks of cur rent album repeatedly . â repeats the entire CD/progr am. â plays all tracks in r andom order . 1 T o select play mode , press REPEAT/ SHUFFLE once or more . â The display sho ws the related icon. 2 Press 2; to star t playback if in the stop/pause position. 3 T o retur n to nor mal playback, press REPEAT/SHUFFLE repeatedly until the modes are no longer display ed . Using USB connectivity ⢠AZ1839 is fitted with a USB por t in the front panel, offer ing a plug and play f eature which allows y ou to play , from your AZ1839, digital music and spok en contents stored on a USB mass stor age device . ⢠Using a USB mass stor age device , you can also enjoy all the f eatures offered by AZ1839 which are explained and instr ucted in the sec- tions of disc oper ation. Compatible USB mass storage devices With the AZ1839, you can use â USB flash memor y (USB 2.0 or USB 1.1) â USB flash play er (USB 2.0 or USB 1.1) ⢠USB device which requires dr iver installation under Windo ws XP is not suppor ted. Note: In some USB flash play er s (or memor y devic- es), the stored contents are recorded using copyright protection technology . Such pro- tected contents will be unplay able on an y other devices (such as AZ1839 device). The system will not play or support the following: ⢠Empty albums: an empty album is an album that does not contain MP3/WMA files, and will not be shown in the displa y . ⢠Non-suppor ted file formats are skipped. This means that e .g.: W ord documents .doc or MP3 files with extension. dlf are ignored and will not be play ed. ⢠AA C , W A V , PCM. NTFS audio f iles ⢠DRM protected WMA f iles ⢠WMA f iles in Lossless format Playing a USB mass storage device 1 Make sure that y our AZ1839 is being pow- ered by A C mains or specified batter ies. 2 Adjust the source selector to CD/USB . 3 Press CD/USB once or more to enter the USB mode . â Display sho ws - - - . 4 Plug a compatib le USB mass stor age device to AZ1839â s USB por t mar ked . If need- ed, use a suitable USB cable to connect between the device and AZ1839â s USB por t. â The device will automatically pow er on. ⢠If the device is not pow ered on, tur n on the pow er manually , then re-connnect it. â AZ1839â s display sho ws - - - and then the total number of pla yab le audio files (Max. display ed tr ack number is 511) stored on the device . 5 Press 2; on your AZ1839 to star t play . â AZ1839â s display will sho w the cur rent tr ack number . Helpful hints: â Up to 511 play able audio f iles stored on a USB mass stor age device can be play ed on AZ1839. â Up to 99 play able alb ums stored on a USB mass stor age device can be selected and display ed on AZ1839. â Make sure that f ile names of MP3 files end with .mp3. and the file names of WMA files end with .wma. â For DRM protected WMA f iles, use Windows Media Pla yer 10 (or later) for con- ver sion. Visit www .microsoft.com for details about Windo ws Media Play er and WM DRM (Windows Media Digital Rights Management). â For USB device playing, if the display sho ws "OL", it means that the USB device is electr i- cally o ver loading AZ1839. CD player and CD handling ⢠If the CD play er cannot read CDs cor rectly , use a cleaning CD to clean the lens before taking the set to repair . ⢠The lens of the CD play er should never be touched! ⢠Sudden changes in the sur rounding temper ature can cause condensation on the lens of your CD pla yer . Playing a CD is then not possible. Do not attempt to clean the lens but lea ve the set in a war m environment until the moisture evapor ates. ⢠Alwa ys close the CD door to a void dust on the lens. ⢠T o clean the CD , wipe in a str aight line from the center towards the edge using a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use cleaning agents as they may damage the disc. ⢠Never write on a CD or attach any sticker s to it. Safety information ⢠Place the set on a flat, hard and stable surface so that the system does not tilt. ⢠Where the MAINS plug or an appliance cou- pler is used as the disconnect device , the dis- connect device shall remain readily operable . ⢠Do not expose the set, batter ies, CDs to humidity , r ain, sand or excessive heat caused by heating equipment or direct sunlight. ⢠The appar atus shall not be exposed to dr ip- ping or splashing. ⢠Adequate ventilation with a minim um gap of 15cm (6 inches) between the v entilation holes and sur rounding surfaces is necessar y to pre- vent heat b uild-up. ⢠Do not cov er the ventilation openings with items such as newspaper s, table-cloths, cur - tains, etc . ⢠No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the appar atus. ⢠No naked flame sources, such as lighted can- dles, should be placed on the appar atus. ⢠The mechanical par ts of the set contain self- lubr icating bear ings and must not be oiled or lubr icated. ⢠T o clean the set, use a dr y cloth. Hearing Safety Listen at a moderate volume: â Using headphones at a high volume can impair y our hear ing. This product can produce sounds in decibel r anges that may cause hearing loss for a nor mal per son, even for exposure less than a minute. Radio reception 1 Adjust the Source selector to FM or MW . 2 Tu r n TUNING to tune to a station. To improve radio reception ⢠For FM, extend, incline and tur n the telescopic antenna for best reception. Reduce its length if the signal is too strong. ⢠For MW , the set uses a built-in antenna. CD player and CD handling ⢠If the CD play er cannot read CDs cor rectly , use a cleaning CD to clean the lens before taking the set to repair . ⢠The lens of the CD play er should never be touched! ⢠Sudden changes in the sur rounding temper ature can cause condensation on the lens of your CD pla yer . Playing a CD is then not possible. Do not attempt to clean the lens but lea ve the set in a war m environment until the moisture evapor ates. ⢠Alwa ys close the CD door to a void dust on the lens. ⢠T o clean the CD , wipe in a str aight line from the center towards the edge using a soft, lint-free cloth.
