Po w er Supply Po w er Supply Whenever con venient, use the power suppl y cord if you want to conser ve batter y life . Make sure y ou remo ve the plug from the set and wall outlet before inser ting batter ies. Batteries (not included) 1 Open the batter y door and inser t 6 batter ies, type R-20 , UM-1 or D-cells , (pref er ably alkaline) with the cor rect polar ity as indicated by the " " and " – " symbols inside the compar tment. 2 Close the batter y door , making sure the batter ies are firmly and cor rectly in place . The set is now ready to operate . Batteries contain chemical substances , so the y should be disposed of properly . • Incor rect use of batter ies can cause electrolyte leakage and will cor rode the compar tment or cause the batter ies to bur st : • Do not mix batter y types: e.g. alkaline with carbon zinc . Only use batter ies of the same type f or the set. • When inser ting new batteries , do not tr y to mix old batter ies with the new ones. • Remove the batteries if the set is not to be used f or a long time. Remote contr ol (See 2 ) Important! • Before using the remote contr ol, remo ve the insulation plastic tab as sho wn in fig- ure 2 . • If the remote contr ol does not function correctly or the oper ating r ange is r educed, replace the batter y with a new (CR2025) type batter y. 1 Pull the batter y tr ay out as sho wn in figure 2 . 2 Replace a new batter y according to polar ity indication, and fully inser t the batter y tray back to the or iginal position. • Incor rect use of batter ies can cause electrolyte leakage and will cor rode the compar tment or cause the batter ies to bur st. • Remov e the batter ies if the set is not to be used for a long time. • Batteries contain chemical substances, so they should be disposed of pr operl y . Using A C po w er W ARNING: Alw ays check you have completely switched off the set, before you change or disconnect po wer supply . 1 Check if the power v oltage , as sho wn on the type plate located on the bottom of the set, cor responds to your local pow er supply . If it does not, consult your dealer or ser vice center . 2 Connect the power cord to the A C~MAINS inlet and the wall socket. The set is now connected and ready f or use . 3 To switch the set off completely , withdr aw the pow er cord from the wall socket. 4 Install the unit near the A C outlet and where the A C power plug can be easil y reached. • Disconnect the pow er cord from the wall socket to protect y our set dur ing hea vy thunder stor ms. Children could seriously injure themselves as the free end of the cab le may still be live if onl y the connector is remov ed from the MAINS socket at the back of the unit. The type plate is located on the bottom of the set. MP3 Link Operation 1 Connect an exter nal audio device to the MP3 LINK inlet on the system. 2 Press SOURCE on the system repeatedly (or press MP3 LINK on the remote control) to select the MP3 link sound source . G eneral operation Switching on and off and selecting the function 1 To switch on the set, press PO WER ON/OFF on the system. 2 To select your sound source , press SOURCE on the front panel of the system or the respective source b uttons on the remote control: CD , TUNER, MP3 LINK or USB . 3 To switch off the set, press PO WER ON/OFF on the system. Adjusting volume and sound • To adjust the volume, press V OLUME /- on the system (or V OL /- on the remote control). • Press DBB on the system or on the remote con- trol to tur n on or off bass enhancement. • Press MAX SOUND on the system (or MAX on the remote control) to optimize the sound output. • Connect a headphone to the ; jack on the rear of the system. • Press MUTE on the remote control to tempor ar ily switch off the sound of the system. Press the same button again to resume. Digital T uner T uning to radio stations 1 Press SOURCE on the system repeatedly or press TUNER on the remote control to select the TUNER (MW or FM) source . 2 Press and hold TUNING / - on the system (or § / ∞ on the remote control) until the display sho ws SEARCH . ➜ The radio automatically tunes to a station of sufficient reception. 3 Repeat step 2 if necessar y until you f ind the desired station. •T o tune to a weak station, press TUNING / - on the system (or § / ∞ on the remote control) br iefly and repeatedly until y ou ha v e f ound optimal reception. To impr o v e radio r eception: • For FM, extend, incline and turn the telescopic aer ial. Reduce its length if the signal is too strong. • For MW, the set uses a built-in aerial. Direct this aer ial by turning the whole set. Pr ogramming radio stations Y ou can store up to a total of 40 r adio stations in the memor y , manually or automaticall y (Autostore). Manual pr o gramming 1 T une to y our desired station (see T uning to radio stations ). 2 Press PROG to activate programming. 3 Press ALB -/ (or ALBUM/PRESET 3 / 4 on the remote control) once or more to allocate a number from 1 to 40. 4 Press PROG to confirm. 5 Repeat steps 1-4 to store other stations. Helpful hints: Y ou can erase a pr eset station by storing another frequenc y in its place . Autostore Autostore automatically star ts progr amming r adio stations from preset 1. Any previous presets e.g. manually programmed will be er ased. 1 Select MW or FM. 2 Press and hold PROG until displays. ➜ A total number of 40 a vailable stations are progr ammed (MW and FM). After all stations are stored, the f ir st autostore preset station will then automatically pla y . • Press 9 once to stop auto-store . To listen to a preset or autostor e station Press ALB -/ (or ALBUM/PRESET 3 / 4 on the remote control) once or more until the desired preset station is display ed. About MP3 The music compression technology MP3 (MPEG1 Audio Lay er 3) signif icantly reduce the digital data of an audio CD while maintaining CD quality sound. • Getting MP3 files: y ou can either do wnload legal music f iles from the internet to your computer hard disc , or create such f iles by conv er ting audio CD files in y our computer through appropr iate encoder software . (128kbps bit r ate or higher is recommended f or MP3 f iles.) • Creating an MP3 CD: bu rn the music f iles from your computer hard disc on a CDR or CDR W using your CD b ur ner . Helpful Hints: – Make sure that the file names of the MP3 files end with .mp3 . – T otal number of music files and albums: around 400 (with a typical file name length of 20 characters) – The length of file names affects the number of tracks f or playback. W ith shor ter file names , more files can be bur ned on a disc . Pla ying a disc • This CD play er pla ys Audio Discs including CD-Recordables (CD-R), CD-Rewr itables (CD-R W) and MP3/WMA CD . • CD-ROM, CD-I, CD V , VCD , D VD or computer CDs are not possible f or playback. IMPOR T ANT! • CDs encoded with cop yright pr otection technologies by some record companies may be unplay able b y this product. • DRM-protected WMA disc is not suppor t. 1 Press SOURCE on the system repeatedly or press CD on the remote control to select the CD source . 2 Open the CD door , and inser t a CD with the pr inted side facing up, then press the CD door gently to close. ➜ READ flashes on the display panel as the CD play er scans the contents of a disc and then Audio CD: the total number of tracks appear s. (See 3 ) 3 Press 2; to star t playback. 4 To pause playback, press 2; . ➜ Display : 2 and the tr ack number flash. (See 4 ) 5 To resume , press 2; again. 6 To stop playback, press 9 . Helpful hints: CD play will also stop when: – you open the CD door ; – you select TUNER , MP3 LINK or USB ; – the CD has reached the end. Selecting a differ ent track • Press ∞ / § once or repeatedly until the desired tr ack number appear s in the display . F or MP3/WMA-CD: Fir st press ALB -/ (or ALBUM/PRESET 3 / 4 on the remote control) once or more to select your alb um. • In the pause/stop position, press 2; to star t playback. Finding a passa ge within a track 1 Dur ing playback, press and hold ∞ or § . ➜ The CD is play ed at high speed and with reduced volume. 2 When you recogniz e the passage y ou want, release ∞ or § to resume nor mal playback. If you lik e , store any track more than once . 1 In the stop position, press ∞ or § to select y our desired track number . F or MP3-CD: fi r st press ALB -/ (or ALBUM/PRESET 3 / 4 on the remote control) once or more to f ind your alb um. 2 Press PROG . ➜ P01 will flash on the display panel.l. (See 5 ). 3 Repeat steps 1-2 to select and store all desired tr acks. • Display: if you tr y to progr am more than 40 tr acks. Erasing a pr ogramme Y ou can er ase the contents of the memor y by : • opening the CD door ; • selecting TUNER , MP3 LINK or USB sound sources; • pressing 9 twice dur ing playback or once in the stop position. ➜ Display sho ws CLEAR . Differ ent pla y modes: REPEA T . and SHUFFLE (See 6 , 7 ) Y ou can select and change the var ious play modes before or during playback, and combine REPEA T modes with PR OG (PRO- GRAM). – plays the current tr ack continuously – repeats the entire CD/progr am. – plays all tracks in r andom order . – pla ys all tr acks repeatedly in r andom order . 1 To select play mode, press MODE on the system once or more (or the REPEA T or SHUFFLE b uttons on the remote control). ➜ The display sho ws the related icon . 2 Press 2; to star t playback if in the stop/pause position. 3 To retur n to nor mal playback, press MODE on the system (or the REPEA T or SHUFFLE b uttons on the remote control) repeatedly until the modes are no longer display ed. – Y ou can also press 9 to cancel y our play mode . • Press SHUFFLE in the stop mode to star t automatic playback in random order . CD Ripping This function enables y ou to record m usic to a connected USB mass stor age device from the CD sound source without inter r upting y our enjo yment of the music . 1 Inser t a USB mass device with sufficient free space to AZ1846’ s USB por t mar ked . 2 Select the CD source and then load a CD onto the set. 3 Select a tr ack where r ipping will star t. 4 Press USB REC to star t r ipping. ➜ “IP onE” scrolls and “ REC ” flashes. ➜ Ripping stops at the end of tr ack playback. ➜ The selected tr ack(s) is (are) sav ed to the USB device . • In the CD mode , to record all tr acks star ting from the one you selected, press USB REC again. ➜ “IP ALL ” scrolls. Then “ ALL ” and “REC ” star t flashing. 5 At any moment, simply press 9 to stop r ip- ping. To delete a track/album from your USB mass storage device 1 Plug in the USB mass device . 2 Select the tr ack to be deleted dur ing play- back. 3 Press and hold 9 on the system for more than 2 seconds or press DEL on the remote control. ➜ “DEL ” star ts flashing on the display panel. 4 Press 9 on the system or DEL on the remote control to confirm the deletion. •T o stop deletion, wait for the system to quit automatically without pressing an y key . Using USB connectivity • AZ1846 is fitted with a USB por t in the front panel, offer ing a plug and play f eature which allows y ou to pla y , from your AZ1846, digital m usic and spok en contents stored on a USB mass stor age device . • Using a USB mass stor age device , you can also enjoy all the f eatures off ered by AZ1846 which are explained and instr ucted in the sec- tions of disc oper ation. Compatible USB mass stora ge de vices With the AZ1846, you can use – USB flash memor y (USB 2.0 or USB 1.1) – USB flash player (USB 2.0 or USB 1.1) • USB device which requires dr iver installation under Windows XP is not suppor ted. Note: In some USB flash players (or memor y devices), the stored contents are recorded using copyright protection technology . Such protected contents will be unplayab le on any other devices (such as AZ1846 device). Supported formats: – USB or memor y f ile format F A T12, F A T16, FA T32 (sector size: 512 - 65,536 bytes) – MP3 bit r ate (data r ate): 32-320 kbps and var iable bit rate – WMA v9 or ear lier – Director y nesting up to a maximum of 8 levels – Number of albums: maximum 99 – Number of tr acks: maximum 999 – ID3 tag v2.0 or later – File name in Uicode UTF8 (maximum length: 128 bytes The system will not pla y or suppor t the follo wing: • Empty albums: an empty album is an album that does not contain MP3/WMA files, and will not be shown in the displa y . • Non-suppor ted file f or mats are skipped. This means that e .g.: W ord documents .doc or MP3 files with extension. dlf are ignored and will not be play ed. • AA C , W A V , PCM. NTFS audio files • DRM protected WMA files • WMA files in Lossless format Pla ying a USB mass storage de vice 1 Make sure that y our AZ1846 is being pow- ered by A C mains or specif ied batter ies. 2 Press SOURCE on the system repeatedly or press USB on the remote control to select the USB source . ➜ Display shows . 3 P lug a compatible USB mass storage device to AZ1846’ s USB por t mar ked . If need- ed, use a suitable USB cab le to connect between the device and AZ1846’ s USB por t. ➜ The device will automatically pow er on. • If the device is not pow ered on, tur n on the pow er manuall y , then re-connnect it. ➜ AZ1846’ s display sho ws and then the total number of pla yab le audio files (Max. display ed tr ack number is 511) stored on the device . 4 Press 2; on your AZ1846 to star t play . •T o select album, press ALB -/ (or ALBUM/PRESET 3 / 4 on the remote control). Helpful hints: – Up to 999 play able audio files stored on a USB mass storage de vice can be played on AZ1846 . – Up to 99 play able albums stored on a USB mass storage de vice can be selected and dis- played on AZ1846 . – Mak e sure that file names of MP3 files end with .mp3. and the file names of WMA files end with .wma. – For DRM protected WMA files , use Windows Media Player 10 (or later) for con ver sion. V isit www .microsoft.com for details about W indows Media Player and WM DRM (W indows Media Digital Rights Management). – For USB de vice playing, if the display shows "OL", it means that the USB device is electr i- cally overloading AZ1846 .Y ou need to change a USB device. CD pla y er and CD handling • If the CD play er cannot read CDs correctly , use a cleaning CD to clean the lens before taking the set to repair . • The lens of the CD play er should nev er be touched! • Sudden changes in the sur rounding temper ature can cause condensation on the lens of your CD pla y er . Playing a CD is then not possible. Do not attempt to clean the lens but lea v e the set in a war m environment until the moisture evapor ates. •A lwa ys close the CD door to av oid dust on the lens. •T o clean the CD , wipe in a str aight line from the center towards the edge using a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use cleaning agents as they may damage the disc. • Never write on a CD or attach any sticker s to it. Safety inf ormation • Place the set on a flat, hard and stable surface so that the system does not tilt. • Where the MAINS plug or an appliance cou- pler is used as the disconnect device , the dis- connect device shall remain readily operable . • Do not expose the set, batter ies, CDs to humidity , r ain, sand or excessive heat caused by heating equipment or direct sunlight. • The appar atus shall not be exposed to dr ip- ping or splashing. • Adequate ventilation with a minim um gap of 15cm (6 inches) between the v entilation holes and sur rounding surfaces is necessar y to prevent heat b uild-up. • Do not cov er the v entilation openings with items such as newspaper s, table-cloths, cur- tains, etc . • No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the appar atus. • No naked flame sources, such as lighted can- dles, should be placed on the appar atus. • The mechanical par ts of the set contain self- lubr icating bear ings and must not be oiled or lubr icated. •T o clean the set, use a dr y cloth. The CD skips tracks – CD damaged or dir ty • Replace or clean CD – Program/shuffle is active • Quit progr am/shuffle mode Note: A CD badly scratched or dirty may result in improper oper ation . Sound skips during MP3 pla yback – MP3 file made at compression level e xceeding 320kbps • Use a low er compression level to record CD tr acks into MP3 format – Disc damaged or dir ty • Replace or clean disc The USB de vice doesn’ t pla y on m y AZ1846 – It is not set in the USB mode. • Press SOURCE on the system repeatedly or press USB on the remote control to select the USB source . – The device is not securely connected to AZ1846 USB por t. • Re-connect the device , and make sure that the device is pow ered on. Tr oubleshooting If a fault occur s, fir st check the points listed below bef ore taking the set for repair . If you are unab le to remedy a prob lem by f ollowing these hints, consult your dealer or ser vice centre . W ARNING: Do not open the set as there is a risk of electric shock. – The device is not supported by AZ1846, or the audio file format stored on the device is not suppor ted by AZ1846. • Use a compatible device/ pla yab le audio file f or- mat. I cannot use the remote contr ol to select CD or USB. – The main unit is not set in CD/USB mode • Press SOURCE on the system repeatedly or press CD or USB on the remote control to select the CD or USB source . Hearing Safety Listen at a moderate v olume: • Using headphones at a high volume can impair y our hearing. This product can produce sounds in decibel r anges that may cause hearing loss for a nor mal per son, even for exposure less than a minute. The higher decibel r anges are offered for those that ma y hav e already experienced some hear ing loss. • Sound can be deceiving. Over time y our hear ing "comfor t level" adapts to higher volumes of sound. So after prolonged listening, what sounds "nor mal" can actually be loud and har mful to y our hearing. T o guard against this, set your v olume to a safe lev el before y our hear ing adapts and lea ve it there. To establish a safe v olume le v el: • Set your v olume control at a lo w setting. • Slowl y increase the sound until you can hear it comf or tably and clear ly , without distor tion. Listen for r easonable periods of time: • Prolonged exposure to sound, even at nor mally "saf e" levels, can also cause hear ing loss. • Be sure to use your equipment reasonab ly and tak e appropr iate breaks. Be sur e to obser ve the follo wing guidelines when using y our headphones: • Listen at reasonable v olumes for reasonab le per iods of time . • Be careful not to adjust the volume as y our hearing adapts. • Do not tur n up the volume so high that y ou can't hear what's around y ou. • Y ou should use caution or tempor ar ily discontinue use in potentiall y hazardous situations. • Do not use headphones while oper ating a motor ized v ehicle , cycling, skateboarding, etc .; it may cre- ate a tr affic hazard and is illegal in man y areas. Impor tant notes for users in the U .K. Mains plug This appar atus is fitted with an appro v ed 13 Amp plug. T o change a fuse in this type of plug proceed as follo ws: 1. Remo ve fuse co v er and fuse . 2. Fix new fuse which should be a BS1362 3 Amp, A.S.T .A. or BSI approv ed type . 3. Ref it the fuse cov er . If the f itted plug is not suitable f or your sock et outlets, it should be cut off and an appropr iate plug fitted in its place. If the mains plug contains a fuse , this should ha ve a value of 3 Amp . If a plug without a fuse is used, the fuse at the distr ibution board should not be greater than 3 Amp . Note: The severed plug m ust be disposed of to a void a possib le shock hazard should it be inser ted into a 13 Amp socket elsewhere . Ho w to connect a plug The wires in the mains lead are coloured with the follo wing code: blue = neutr al (N), brown = liv e (L).
