Getting the bab y monitor r eady Bab y Unit For your con venience the Bab y Unit can be mains or batter y oper ated. Mains operated use • Connect the A C pow er adapter (14) to a mains sock et and the cor d to the DC pow er supply sock et (9) of the Baby Unit. > The Bab y Unit is now ready for mains operated use . Batter y operated use 1 Remov e the batter y compar tment cov er (15). Tu rn the Batter y Lock knob to the left (for this use a coin) and slide the cov er downwards. 2 Insert four 1.5V , AA size batteries noting the and - configuration inside the batter y compar tment. (The batter ies are not included; we recommend non-rechar geable Philips Alkaline batter ies). 3 Put the batter y compar tment cov er back in place. • Slide the cov er upward until it clicks in position. • Tu rn the Batter y Lock knob to the r ight (for this use a coin). > The Baby Unit is no w ready for batter y oper ated use . The Baby Unit operates for a minimum of 25 hour s on fresh batter ies > When the batter y indicator in the display (4) is empty (no blocks) and the display sho ws ‘ Low Batter y’, the batter y power is lo w . The Baby Unit should now still operate for 15 minutes. After that you should install new batter ies. Tips: – Switch off the Baby night light to save batter y power , when the Baby Unit is batter y operated. – Remove empty batteries from the Baby Unit. Batter y back-up As soon as the batteries are inserted batter y back-up will be activated. In case of mains failure during mains operated use, the unit will automatically switch to battery operated use . As soon as the mains supply is back on the unit switches to mains operated use again. Pa r ent Unit 1 Remov e the batter y compar tment cov er (29) by lifting the cov er outwar d fr om the bottom. 2 Insert the two enclosed AA rechargeable batteries, noting the and - configuration inside the batter y compar tment. 3 Put the batter y compar tment cov er back in place. Fir st slide the upper side of the cov er into the recesses in the batter y compar tment. Then press the under side downwards until it clicks in position. 4 Connect the A C pow er adapter (28) to a mains sock et. 5 Place the Parent Unit inside the charging base (22). > The red char ging light (23) lights up. > The Parent Unit can be operated now , but y ou should lea ve it in the char ging base until the batter ies are fully charged (at least 16 hour s). When the batter ies are fully charged, the Parent Unit can be tak en out of the char ging base and used cordlessly for up to 16 hours. > When the batter y indicator in the display (19) is empty (no blocks), the display sho ws ‘ Low Batter y ’ and the ‘low batter y aler t’ sounds ever y 60 seconds the batter y power is lo w . Place the Parent Unit inside the char ging base to rechar ge the batter ies. > If the rechar geable batteries begin to lose their effectiveness, replace them with two new rechargeable batteries. Notes: – Use rechargeable batter ies only! Never oper ate the P arent Unit with other types of batteries! – The ‘low batter y aler t’ can be switched off by pressing any button on the P arent Unit. –N e ver oper ate the P arent Unit on the charging base without the proper batter ies! Disposal of batteries • Dispose of used batter ies in an environmentall y fr iendly manner . • Do not mix old and new batter ies, or different types of batter ies. • Remov e Baby Unit batteries if the baby monitor is not to be used for long per iods. Beltclip Connecting to the P arent Unit 1 Slide the wider side of the clip into the small rectangular r ecess on the back of the Parent Unit. Make sure the pins on the under side are abov e the circular recess. 2 Press the clip do wnwards until it clicks in position. Disconnecting from the P arent Unit • Press the visible pin in the cir cular r ecess upwards and lift the clip outwards. Monitoring y our bab y Switching on the units 1 P osition the Baby Unit at least one metr e a wa y fr om y our baby . Never place the Bab y Unit inside the baby ’ s bed or playpen. 2 Press and hold the A button (7) on the Baby Unit to switch on the Baby Unit. 3 Press and hold the A button (26) on the Parent Unit to switch on the Parent Unit. > Both displays light up and indicate the current room temper ature . > All lights light up for 2 seconds and then turn off again. > The DECT SYSTEM LINK lights (3 and 21) of both units light up or ange then star t blinking (green). The units now search for connection. > The DECT SYSTEM LINK lights (3 and 21) of both units light continuously (green) when the units ha v e established connection. Y ou can now monitor y our bab y . • To s witch off the units again press and hold the A buttons (7 and 26). > The units will beep when they are switched off. Adjusting loudspeak er v olume • Use the buttons (18) on the Parent Unit to incr ease/decr ease the loudspeak er volume of the Par ent Unit. • Use the buttons (13) on the Baby Unit to incr ease/decrease the loudspeak er volume of the Bab y Unit. > The displays giv e visual feedback on the v olume settings on the units: V olume Off = P arent Unit volume switched off/monitoring baby silently; V olume 9 = minimum; V olume 99999 = maximum. Notes: – The volume of the P arent Unit can be switched off (‘ V olume Off ’). The volume of the Baby Unit cannot be switched off . –A high pitched noise may occur in case the units are too close to each other . To avoid this you should switch the P arent Unit volume off before placing the units close to each other . –Y ou can only change the Baby Unit volume if the connection between the Baby Unit and P arent Unit is estab lished. – The microphone sensitivity of the Baby Unit can be adjusted in the P arent Unit menu. See ‘P arent Unit menu operation’ and ‘Menu options’. T alking back to comfort your bab y 1 On the Parent Unit, pr ess and hold the T ALK button (17) until the DECT SYSTEM LINK lights (3 and 21) of both units blink (gr een). Then talk clearly into the loudspeak er grill. > While the T ALK button on the Parent Unit is being pressed, no sounds from the Baby Unit can be heard on the loudspeak er of the Parent Unit. 2 Release the T ALK button when finished or when you wish to hear your baby again. Explanation of featur es Monitoring bab y silently • Use the buttons (18) to switch off the Parent Unit v olume ( ‘V olume Off ’ ). > The sound-level lights (27) visually aler t you to bab y’ s sounds. The more sound your bab y makes, the more lights light. > When no sound is detected, all lights will be off. > If the volume of the P arent Unit is set to Off, the Parent Unit will beep as soon as the second sound-level-light (25) lights red. For this ‘Sound Aler t’ has to be activated in the P arent Unit menu. See ‘Parent Unit menu operation’ and ‘Menu options’. – – – ENGLISH 10 SC479_book.qxd 06-07-2004 09:55 Pagina 10
Checking that the units ha v e established a connection • Check that the DECT SYSTEM LINK light (21) on the Par ent Unit lights continuously (gr een) to confirm that the connection betw een both units is reliable. > The DECT SYSTEM LINK light blinks green when the units lost connection with each other . If connection is not established within 30 seconds, DECT SYSTEM LINK light blinks red, the displays show ‘Not Linked’ and the system check alar m on the Parent Unit beeps ev er y 30 seconds. This beeping can be suppressed for 3 minutes b y pressing any b utton on one of the units. Switching the night lights on and off •P r ess the ɨ button (2) on the Baby Unit to s witch on the night lights. •P r ess the ɨ button again to s witch off the night lights. > The nightlights dim and gr adually switches off. Notes: – Switch off the night lights when operating the Bab y Unit on batter ies to conser ve power . – The nightlights can also be switched on and off via the P arent Unit menu. For this see ‘P arent Unit menu oper ation’ and ‘Menu options’. Pa ging the Par ent Unit If the Parent Unit is misplaced and the v olume is switched off, you can use the Page b utton on the Baby Unit to locate the P arent Unit. • Pr ess the page button (1) on the Baby Unit. > The Parent Unit will automaticall y reset to medium volume lev el and paging aler t will sound. • To stop the paging alert, press the Page button again or any button on the Parent Unit. ENGLISH 12 Pla ying lullabies 1 Press the l button (6) on the Baby Unit r epeatedly to select one out of five a vailable lullabies. 2 Press the 9 / 2 button (10) to pla y the selected lullab y . > l and the name of the lullaby appear on both P arent Unit and Baby Unit display . The lullaby will be play ed repeatedly f or fiv e minutes. > If you select ‘Play All’, all lullabies will be play ed one after another repeatedly for f iv e minutes. Each lullaby lasts for about 30 seconds. 3 Press the 9 / 2 button (10) again to stop pla yback. Notes: – Lullabies can also be selected and played via the P arent Unit menu. For this see ‘P arent Unit menu oper ation’ and ‘Menu options’. –Y ou can also stop playback by pressing the OK button (25) on the P arent Unit. Interrupting pla yback 1 Press the ; button (11) on the Baby Unit to interrupt pla yback. > ‘P aused’ lights up on both displays and l star ts blinking. 2 Press the ; button (11) again to restart pla yback. Notes: –Y ou can also inter r upt and restar t playback by pressing the ✔ button (25) on the P arent Unit. – If playback is not restarted within 60 seconds , the ‘Lullaby’ function will switch off automatically . Pa r ent Unit menu operation Most SC479 functions can be oper ated either using the keys on the units or via the Parent Unit men u. Some functions, how ever can only be operated via the Parent Unit men u. In this chapter we will descr ibe how to operate the SC479 via the menu. In the next chapter will give an o ver view and explanation of menu options. 1 Press the MENU button (20) on the Par ent Unit to acces the menu. > The first menu option appear s on the display . 2 Use the buttons (18) to select the desired menu option. – SC479_book.qxd 06-07-2004 09:55 Pagina 12
ENGLISH 13 3 Press the OK button (25) to confirm y our selection. 4 Use the buttons (18) to make adjustments and selections and pr ess the OK button (25) to confirm. > In some cases ‘ Saved ’ appear s on the display to confirm that an adjustment has boon stored. 5 Press the MENU button (20) again to exit the men u. Menu options The options ‘Nightlight’ and ‘Lullaby ’ can be operated via the keys on the sets as well as via the men u. The other options can only be operated via the menu. Nightlight Confirm ‘Light On?’ or ‘Light Off?’ to switch the nightlights on or off. Lullaby Confirm ‘Play?’ to replay the last pla y ed lullaby or ‘Stop Lullaby?’ to stop playback. Sensitivity Select the desired sensitivity level f or the Baby Unit microphone: ‘Sensitivity 9 ‘ = minim um level / lo west sensitivity; ‘Sensitivity 99999 ‘ = maxim um level (contin uous tr ansmission) / highest sensitivity . When set to maximum lev el (continuous transmission), the Baby Unit monitor s continuously and all sounds, regardless of level, can be heard on the Parent Unit. Batter y oper ating time may decrease to approximatel y 12 hour s dur ing continuous tr ansmission. Y ou can only change the Bab y Unit microphone sensitivity if the connection between the Bab y Unit and Parent Unit is estab lished. Sound Aler t Confirm ‘Aler t On?’ or ‘Aler t ‘Off ’. If Sound Aler t is switched on, the P arent Unit beeps as soon as the second sound-level-light (25) lights red while the v olume is switched off. T emperature Set a minimum and a maxim um room temper ature (‘Range’) which you think are conv enient for y our baby . Minimum temperature can be set between 10 °C and 19 °C; maximum temperature can be set between 22 °C and 30 °C . If the actual room temper ature exceeds the set minimum or maximum temperature , the ‘ Low ’ or ‘High ’ indication appear s on the display and the actual temperature star ts blinking. If the room temper ature drops below 7 °C or rises abov e 33 °C , ‘– –’ star ts blinking on the display . – SC479_book.qxd 06-07-2004 09:55 Pagina 13
T emperature Alert T emper ature aler t will sound from the Parent Unit if the actual room temper ature exceeds the set minimum or maxim um temper ature or if the room temper ature drops below 7 °C or rises abov e 33 °C . T o set the aler t: Select ‘T emper ature’ in the menu. When ‘Range’ appear s on the display , press the button (18), select ‘Aler t On’ or ‘Off ’ and confirm by pressing the OK b utton (25). Operating range • The SBC SC479 baby monitor has an open air operating range of up to 300 metres. W alls, ceilings, large objects and even glass will decr ease the operating range. Depending on your local cir cumstances the operating range can decrease do wn to appr oximatel y 50 metres. The system check function (lights 3, 21 and beeping sound on the Parent unit) will in principle indicate to you the r eliability of the connection betw een the Parent unit and Bab y unit and whether you ar e out of range. – ENGLISH 14 SC479_book.qxd 06-07-2004 09:55 Pagina 14

Personal preferences need to be set again.
