Sm all, light we ight, and batter y p ow ered, it is designe d for sim ple and r e liabl e oper atio n. Sudde n Cardia c Arrest The Hear tS tar t is used t o treat th e most com mon caus es o f sudde n cardi ac a rr est (SC A), i ncludin g ventricular fibrilla tion (V F). SC A is a co ndition that o ccurs w hen the hear t un expecte dly stops pum ping. SC A can occu r to anyone â infant, ch ild, adu lt, male or fema le â anywhere , at any tim e. Many vict ims of SC A do not ha ve wa rni ng sig ns or symp tom s. VF is a chao tic q uiv eri ng of the hea rt muscl e that pr ev ents it fr o m pump ing bloo d. The only e ffective treat ment for VF is d efibrilla tion. The Hear tSta rt treats VF by sen ding a shock across th e hear t, so it ca n sta rt b eatin g regula rly again . Unless this is su ccessful w ith in the f irst few minute s afte r the h eart stops beatin g, the victim is not likely to sur vive . Remo v e th e He artStart fr om its pac ka ging. 2. R emo v e a new SMA R T Pads Ca rtr i dg e fr om it s pac ka g e. * * T o replace a used ca rtridge or insert a differ ent cartridge, first loca te the latch at t he top edge of t he defibrillator , and slide it to t he side. The pads cartridge will be relea sed. Lift out the ca rtridge and re place as described in steps 2 and 3.

Rem ov e the batt er y from its pack aging. I nstall it in the ba tter y com par tmen t on the b ack of the defibrilla tor . 5. The Hear tSta rt will au toma tically ru n a se lf-test when the batte ry is inse rte d. Pr ess the S hock but ton wh en ins truct ed. Whe n the self-t es t is o v er , the defib rillato r will repo rt the resu lt, an d tell you to p ush the green O n/Off butt on in c ase of an emerge nc y . ( Do not push the green button un less this is an actual emergency. ) Then the defib rillato r will turn o ff and go to st andby mo de. B e sur e the pads ha v e bee n remo v ed fr o m the li ner befo r e plac ing the m. Where to plac e pads on adults and children over 25 kg/55 pounds or 8 ye ar s ol d (anteri or-ant erior). Where to place pads on infants or children under 25 kg/55 pounds or 8 y ears old (anter ior-posterior).

Sudde n Cardia c Arrest The Hear tS tar t is used t o treat th e most com mon caus es o f sudde n cardi ac a rr est (SC A), i ncludin g ventricular fibrilla tion (V F). SC A is a co ndition that o ccurs w hen the hear t un expecte dly stops pum ping. SC A can occu r to anyone â infant, ch ild, adu lt, male or fema le â anywhere , at any tim e. Many vict ims of SC A do not ha ve wa rni ng sig ns or symp tom s. VF is a chao tic q uiv eri ng of the hea rt muscl e that pr ev ents it fr o m pump ing bloo d. The only e ffective treat ment for VF is d efibrilla tion. The Hear tSta rt treats VF by sen ding a shock across th e hear t, so it ca n sta rt b eatin g regula rly again . Unless this is su ccessful w ith in the f irst few minute s afte r the h eart stops beatin g, the victim is not likely to sur vive . The pads cartridge will be relea sed. Lift out the ca rtridge and re place as described in steps 2 and 3.
