LFF6020 - 26 - 6 - Network features Network features You may connect your multifunction terminal to a wireless network. However, practical knowledge of your computer configuration is required to set up a network. You can connect your machine to a PC using a USB cable or make a wireless co nnection (via radio) with a PC or network. T y pe of radio network A radio network or WLAN (Wir eless Local Area Network) is created when at least two computers, printers o r other peripheral de vices communicate with each other in a network via radio wa ves (high freq uency waves). The transmission of data in the radio network is based on the standards 802 .11b and 802.11g . According to how the network is set up, it may be described as an infra structure network or an ad -hoc network. Radio infrastructure network In an infrastructure networ k, several devices communicate via a central access poin t (a gateway or router). All data is sent to th e access point (gateway or router) from where it is re-distrib uted. Radio ad-hoc network In an ad-hoc network, the devices communicate directly with each other without passing through an access point. The speed of communic ation across th e whole radio network is as fast as the weake st connection in the network. The speed of communication is also de pendent on spatial distance between transmitter and r eceiver, as well as the number of barriers , such as walls or ceilings. Radio networks (WLAN) Three steps are necessary to incorpor ate your machine into a radio network (W LAN): 1 Configure the networ k to your PC. 2 Set up the parameters for your machin e so that it can function in a network. 3 Having set up the parameters for you r device, install the Companion Suite Pro software onto your PC with the necessary printer drivers. Once the machine is incorpor ated into a WLAN network, you can from your PC: • print documents on the multifunction machine from your usual applications, • scan colour, grey scale or b lack and white documents on your PC. Important If you have a WLAN adaptor , you can incorporate your machine as a network printer into a radio network. This works only with an appr oved adaptor that you can ob tain from our ordering dep artment. For further information, contact www .sagem-communications.com. CAUTION Beware, when you are using a wireless connection, that cert ain items of medical equipment, sensitive or security systems may be affected by the radio transmissions of your de vice; in all cases, please follow safety guidelines closely . Important Please note that in ad-hoc mode, the WP A/WP A2 encryption method is not available. Important The PC and all other devices mu st have their paramete rs set up to the same network as the multifunction machine. All the det ails needed for setting up the device, such as the network nam es (SSID), type of radio network, encryption key , IP address or subnetwork mask, must match the specifica tions of the n etwork. Y ou w ill find these details on your PC or on the Access Point. T o find out how to set up the paramete rs for your PC, please consult the users’ manu al for your WLAN adaptor . For large networks, please seek the advice of your network administrator .
LFF6020 - 27 - 6 - Network features Connect your WLAN adaptor Your machine belongs to a new ge neration of t erminals that you can incorporate into a WLAN netwo rk using a WLAN USB key. 1 Plug your WLAN USB key in to the USB port of your machine. Configure your network Creating or rejoining a network Before attempting to use a WLAN adaptor on yo ur machine, you must enter the parameters that will allow a WLAN network to recognise your machin e. On your machine you will find simple instructions that guide you step by step through th e set-up of your network. Just follow them!  281 - SETUP / WLAN / CONFIG. Note Y o u can be sure of perf ect communication if you use an approved adapto r in conjunction with your PC. All of the latest pr inter drivers for the approved adapto r may be found on our website togeth er with further information: www .sagem-communications.com. Important Y our machine’s network radio adaptor transm its data using the radio protocol IEEE 802.1 1g; it can also be incorpora ted into an existing IEEE 802.1 1b network. When connecting to your machine, only use the approved adap tor . Other transmitting or receiving adaptors m ay damage yo ur device. Irrespective of whether you use your machine in an infrastructure or ad- hoc network, you must set up certain network and security parameters (for example, the Service-Set-ID (SSID) and the encr yption key). These must match the network’ s specifications. Note We recommend that the settings o f your WLAN network should only be changed by a person with a good knowledge of the config uration of your computer. Note If you choose an existing ne twork, steps 5 and 6 (and possibly 7) are carried out automatically . Important Please note that in ad-hoc mode, the WP A/WP A2 encryption method is not available.
