Po w er Supply Whenever conv enient, use the power supply cord if you want to conser ve batter y life. Make sure you remo ve the plug from the set and wall outlet before inser ting batter ies. Batteries (not included) 1 Open the batter y compar tment and inser t six batteries, type R-14 , UM-2 or C-cells , (preferably alkaline) with the correct polarity as indicated by the " " and " âÂÂ" symbols inside the compar tment (See 1). 2 Replace the compar tment door , making sure the batteries are firmly and cor rectly in place. The set is now ready to operate. Batteries contain chemical substances, so they should be disposed of pr operly. ⢠Incorrect use of batter ies can cause electrolyte leakage and will corrode the compar tment or cause the batter ies to burst: ⢠Do not mix batter y types: e.g. alkaline with carbon zinc. Only use batteries of the same type for the set. ⢠When inser ting new batter ies, do not tr y to mix old batteries with the new ones. ⢠Remove the batteries if the set is not to be used for a long time. Using AC pow er 1 Check if the power/mains v oltage, as shown on the type plate located on the bottom of the set, cor responds to your local power supply . If it does not, consult your dealer or ser vice center . 2 If your set is equipped with a voltage selector , adjust the selector so that it matches with the local power supply . 3 Connect the power cord to the AC MAINS inlet and the wall socket. The set is now ready for use. 4 To switch the set off completely , withdraw the power cord from the wall socket. ⢠Disconnect the power cord from the wall socket to protect your set during heavy thunderstor ms. The type plate is located on the bottom of the set. Helpful hints: âÂÂT o avoid unnecessary ener gy consumption, always adjust the sour ce selector to T APE/OFF after using the set. Also check that the tape deck keys are released. Basic functions Switching on/off the set: 1 To switch on, adjust the source selector to CD/MP3 , RADIO or T APE/OFF as desired. 2 To switch off, adjust the source selector to T APE/OFF and check the cassette keys are released. Adjusting volume and sound Adjust the sound with the V OLUME and DBB (Dynamic Bass Boost) controls. Radio reception 1 Push the source selector to RADIO . 2 Adjust the MW â¢FM to MW or FM to select your desired wa veband. 3 Tu r n TUNING to tune to a r adio station. 4 To switch off the radio, adjust the source selector to T APE/OFF and check the cassette keys are released. Helpful hints: To impro ve reception ⢠For FM , extend, incline and turn the telescopic antenna. Reduce its length if the signal is too strong. ⢠For MW , uses a built-in antenna. About MP3 The music compression technology MP3 (MPEG1 Audio Layer 3) significantly reduce the digital data of an audio CD while maintaining CD quality sound. ⢠Getting MP3 files: y ou can either download legal music files from the internet to your computer hard disc, or create such files by conver ting audio CD files in your computer through appropriate encoder software . (128kbps bit rate or higher is recommended f or MP3 files.) ⢠Creating a MP3 CD: bu rn the music files from your computer hard disc on a CDR or CDRW using y our CD burner . Helpful Hints: â Make sure that the file names of the MP3 files end with .mp3 . â T otal number of music files and albums: around 350 (with a typical file name length of 20 characters) â The length of file names affects the number of tracks for playback. With shorter file names , more files can be burned on a disc . Pla ying a disc This player pla ys Audio Discs including CD-R/ CD-RW , and MP3 CD . Do not tr y to play a CD-ROM, CD-I, CD V , VCD, DVD or computer CD . IMPOR T ANT! ⢠CDs encoded with cop yright protection technologies by some record companies may be unplayable b y this product. ⢠For a disc with CD Audio tr acks and MP3 files, only the CD Audio tr acks will be played . 1 Adjust the source selector to CD/MP3 . â Display: - - - appear s. 2 To open the disc door , lift the disc door at the edge marked LIFT TO OPEN . 3 Inser t a disc with the pr inted side facing up and press the disc door gently close. â Display: The total number of tracks appears. 4 Press 2; to star t playback. â Display: 2 and the current tr ack number . F or MP3-CD only: â The current track number â XXXâ and album number â ALB UM XXX â will be displayed interchangeab ly . (See 23 ) 5 To pause playback press 2; . â Display: 2 flashes. 6 Press 2; again to resume playback. 7 To stop playback, press 9 . Helpful Hints: The disc playback will also stop when: âÂÂy ou open the disc compar tment; âÂÂy ou select RADIO or T APE sound source; â the disc has reached the end of the playback. Selecting a different track ⢠Press â or ç once or repeatedly until the desired track number appear s in the display . F or MP3-CD: First press ALBUM (up) once or more to find your alb um. ⢠In the pause/stop position, press 2; to star t playback. Finding a passage within a track 1 During playback, press and hold down â or ç . â The disc is played at high speed and low volume. 2 When you recognize the passage y ou want release â or ç . â Normal playback resumes. Helpful Hints: â When your searching reaches the end of the last track, the disc playback stops. Pro gramming tracks Y ou may store up to 20 tracks (for MP3-CD: 10 tracks) in the desired sequence . If y ou like, store any track more than once. 1 In the stop position, press PROG to star t programming. â Display shows P01 indicating the star t of the program. PROG flashes. (See 4 ) 2 Press â or ç to select your desired track n umber . F or MP3-CD: fir st press ALBUM once or more to find your alb um. 3 Press PROG to store the desired tr ack. â Display shows P02 (up to 20 or 10 in sequence), indicating the next program location available. 4 Repeat steps 2 to 3 to select and store all desired tracks. 5 Press 2; to play the program. To re view y our program In the stop position, press and hold PROG 2 seconds. â The display sho ws all the stored tr acks in sequence. Helpful Hints: â Display shows P01 if no tr ack is programmed â If you tr y to store more than 20 tracks (for MP3-CD: 10 tr acks), no track can be selected and the display will show P--. To erase a pro gram Y ou can erase a progr am by: â pressing 9 (twice during playback or once in the stop position); â selecting RADIO or T APE sound source; â opening the disc door ; â Display: PR OG disappear s. Selecting different pla y modes (See 5 , 6 ) Y ou can select and change the various play modes before or during playback, and combine REPEA T modes with PROG . REP â plays the current tr ack continuously . REP ALL â plays the entire disc/program continuously . SHUF â plays all tracks in r andom order . 1 To select play modes , press MODE once or more. 2 Press 2; to star t playback if in the stop position . 3 To select nor mal playback, press MODE repeatedly until the various modes are no longer displayed. â Y ou can also press 9 to cancel your play modes. Safety information (See 7 ) ⢠Place the set on a hard, flat and stable surface so that the system does not tilt. ⢠Do not expose the set, batter ies, CDs to humidity , r ain, sand or excessive heat caused by heating equipment or direct sunlight. ⢠The apparatus shall not be exposed to dripping or splashing. ⢠Adequate ventilation with a minimum gap of 15 cm between the ventilation holes and sur- rounding surfaces is necessar y to prevent heat build-up. ⢠The ventilation should not be impeded by covering the ventilation openings with items, such as newspapers, tab le-cloths, cur tains, etc.. ⢠No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the apparatus. ⢠No naked flame sources, such as lighted can- dles, should be placed on the appar atus. ⢠The mechanical par ts of the set contain self-lubricating bear ings and must not be oiled or lubricated. â¢T o clean the set, use a dr y cloth. Do not use any cleaning agents containing alcohol, ammonia, benzene or abr asives as these may harm the housing. Ta pe deck maintenance (See 7 ) To ensure quality recording and playback of the tape deck, clean par ts A , B and C as shown, once a month. Use a cotton bud slightly moistened with alcohol or a special head cleaning fluid to clean the deck. 1 Open the cassette holder by pressing 9 / . 2 Press 1 and clean the roller C . 3 P ress ; and clean the heads A , and the capstan B . 4 After cleaning, press 9 / . â Cleaning of the heads can also be done by playing a cleaning cassette through once. CD pla yer and CD handling (See 7 ) ⢠If the CD player cannot read CDs correctly , use a cleaning CD to clean the lens before taking the set to repair . ⢠The lens of the CD player should nev er be touched! ⢠Sudden changes in the surrounding temperature can cause condensation on the lens of your CD play er . Playing a CD is then not possible. Do not attempt to clean the lens but leav e the set in a war m environment until the moisture evaporates. â¢A lwa ys close the CD-tape door to avoid dust on the lens. â¢T o clean the CD , wipe in a straight line from the center towards the edge using a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use cleaning agents as they may damage the disc. ⢠Never write on a CD or attach any stickers to it. Maintenance & Safety Ta pe operation/recor ding Playing a ta pe 1 Adjust the source selector to T APE/OFF . 2 Press ST OP ⢠OPEN 9 / to open the cassette holder , inser t a cassette and close the deck. 3 Press PLA Y 1 to star t playback. 4 To pause playback press PA USE 8 . 5 To resume, press 8 again. 6 To stop the tape, press 9 / . F ast forwar ding/rewinding 1 Press SEARCH 5 or 6 until you reach y our desired passage. 2 Press 9 / to stop rewinding/fast forwarding. Helpful Hints: â During playback, the keys are automatically release at the end of a tape, and the set is switched off (except if 8 has been activated). â During fast forwarding/rewinding, the keys will not be released at the end of a tape. T o switch off the set, make sure the cassette keys are also released. General information on recor ding ⢠Recording is permissible insofar as copyright or . other r ights of third par ties are not infringed. ⢠For recording, use only NORMAL type cas- settes (IEC type I) on which the tabs have not y et been broken. This deck is not suited for recording on CHROME (IEC II) or MET AL (IEC IV) type cassettes. ⢠The best recording level is set automatically . Altering the VOLUME and DBB controls will not affect the recording. â¢T o protect a tape from accidental erasure , break out the tabs. If you wish to record again, cover the tabs with a piece of adhesive tape. CD/MP3-CD synchro start recording 1 Select CD/MP3 source . 2 I nser t a disc and if desired, program tr ack n umbers. 3 P ress 9 / to open the cassette holder . Inser t a blank tape and close the deck. 4 P ress RECORD 0 to star t recording. ⢠Playing of the disc/ programme star ts auto- matically from the beginning. Y ou donâÂÂt need to star t the player separately . 5 For brief inter ruptions, press ; .T o resume recording, press ; again. 6 To stop recording, press 9 / . Recording from the Radio 1 Adjust the source selector to RADIO . 2 T une to a desired r adio station (See Radio reception ) 3 Follows steps 3-6, under CD/MP3 synchro start recording . Cassette Recorder The making of unauthorized copies of copy-pr otected material, including com- puter programmes, files, broadcasts and sound recordings, ma y be an infringe- ment of copyrights and constitute a criminal offence. This equipment should not be used for such purposes.

Reconnect after a f ew seconds no indication â No disc inser ted ⢠Inser t a suitable disc â Disc badly scratched or dirty ⢠Replace/clean CD (See Maintenance) â CD-R(W) is blank or the disc is not finalized. ⢠Use a finalized CD-R(W) â Laser lens steam up â¢W ait until lens has cleared Note: Make sure the CD is not encoded with Copyright pr otection technologies , as some do not conform to the Compact Disc standard . . The disc skips tracks â Disc damaged or dir ty ⢠Replace or clean disc â Shuffle or program is active ⢠Switch off shuffle/progr am Note: F or a disc with CD Audio tracks and MP3 files, only the CD Audio tr acks will be played. Sound skips during MP3 playback â MP3 file made at compression level exceeding 320kbps ⢠Use a lower compression lev el to record CD tracks into MP3 format â Disc damaged or dir ty ⢠Replace or clean disc P oor cassette sound quality â Dust and dir t on the heads, etc . ⢠Clean deck par ts, see Maintenance â Use of incompatible cassette types (METAL or CHROME) ⢠Only use NORMAL (IEC I ) for recording Recording does not work â Cassette tab(s) may be broken ⢠Apply adhesive tape over the missing tab space Tr oubleshooting If a fault occurs, f ir st check the points listed below before taking the set for repair . If you are unable to remedy a prob lem by following these hints, consult your dealer or ser vice centre . W ARNING: Do not open the set as there is a risk of electric shock. Under no cir- cumstances should you try to repair the set your self, as this will inval- idate the guarantee. Envir onmental information All unnecessar y packaging mater ial has been omitted. The packaging can be easily separat- ed into three materials: cardboard, polystyrene and plastic. Y our set consists of materials which can be recycled if disassembled b y a specialized compan y . CD pla yer and CD handling (See 7 ) ⢠If the CD player cannot read CDs correctly , use a cleaning CD to clean the lens before taking the set to repair . ⢠The lens of the CD player should nev er be touched! ⢠Sudden changes in the surrounding temperature can cause condensation on the lens of your CD play er . Playing a CD is then not possible. Do not attempt to clean the lens but leav e the set in a war m environment until the moisture evaporates. â¢A lwa ys close the CD-tape door to avoid dust on the lens. â¢T o clean the CD , wipe in a straight line from the center towards the edge using a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use cleaning agents as they may damage the disc. ⢠Never write on a CD or attach any stickers to it. Maintenance & Safety Ta pe operation/recor ding Playing a ta pe 1 Adjust the source selector to T APE/OFF . 2 Press ST OP ⢠OPEN 9 / to open the cassette holder , inser t a cassette and close the deck. 3 Press PLA Y 1 to star t playback. 4 To pause playback press PA USE 8 . 5 To resume, press 8 again. 6 To stop the tape, press 9 / . F ast forwar ding/rewinding 1 Press SEARCH 5 or 6 until you reach y our desired passage. 2 Press 9 / to stop rewinding/fast forwarding. Helpful Hints: â During playback, the keys are automatically release at the end of a tape, and the set is switched off (except if 8 has been activated). â During fast forwarding/rewinding, the keys will not be released at the end of a tape. T o switch off the set, make sure the cassette keys are also released. General information on recor ding ⢠Recording is permissible insofar as copyright or . other r ights of third par ties are not infringed. ⢠For recording, use only NORMAL type cas- settes (IEC type I) on which the tabs have not y et been broken. This deck is not suited for recording on CHROME (IEC II) or MET AL (IEC IV) type cassettes. ⢠The best recording level is set automatically . Altering the VOLUME and DBB controls will not affect the recording. â¢T o protect a tape from accidental erasure , break out the tabs. If you wish to record again, cover the tabs with a piece of adhesive tape. CD/MP3-CD synchro start recording 1 Select CD/MP3 source . 2 I nser t a disc and if desired, program tr ack n umbers. 3 P ress 9 / to open the cassette holder . Inser t a blank tape and close the deck. 4 P ress RECORD 0 to star t recording. ⢠Playing of the disc/ programme star ts auto- matically from the beginning.
