CAUTION The ST ANDBY/ON switch on this unit will not completely shut off all power from the AC outlet. Since the power cord ser ves as the main disconnect device for the unit, you will need to unplug it from the AC outlet to shut down all power . Therefore, make sure the unit has been installed so that the power cord can be easily unplugged from the AC outlet in case of an accident. M a k e s u r e t o f o l l o w t h e i n d i c a t i o n s (  ,  ) inside the compartment. Important Incorrect use of batteries may result in such hazards as leakage an d bursting. Observe the following precau tions: • Never use new and old batteries together. • Insert the plus and minus sides of the batteries properly according to the marks in the battery case. • Batteries with the same shape may h ave different voltages. Do n ot use different batterie s toge ther. • When disposing of used batterie s, please comply with governmental regulations or environmental publ ic instruction’s rule s that apply in your cou ntry or area. • Do not use or store batteries in direct sunlight or other excessively hot place, such as inside a c ar or near a heater. Before you start 01 7 En Range of the rem ote control unit The remote c ontrol has a range of ab out 7 meters. It may n ot work properly if: • There are obstacles between th e remote control and this unit’s remote sen sor. • Direct sunlight or fluorescent l ight is shining onto the remote sensor. • This system is located near a device that is emitting infrared rays. • This uni t is operated simultaneo usly wi th another infrared rem ote control unit. Attaching the non-s kid pads Use the self-adhesive non-skid p ads to provide a stable base for the speakers. Attach four to each speaker as shown below. The illust ration shows the CX505. • CX500 model only – Attach the non-skid pads to four corners on the bottom su rface of each speaker. (The shape of the speaker is different from the CX505 model) • CX303 model only – Attach the non-skid pads to four corners on the bottom surface of the Front speaker. Placing the subwoofer The subwoofer supp lied with this system can be placed u pright or on its side (flat). Choos e the position that works best for your room, then attach the non-skid pads as shown below. Caution • Do not place o ther speakers (front/center/ surround ) on top of the subwoofer. There is a risk that they will fall and cause injuries. When reattaching, start from the top then push the bottom in until secure. • It is not recommended (du e to dirt and dust) to leave the speaker grilles removed. • Do not install y our speak ers overh ead on the ceiling or w all. If improperly attached, the speaker grille can fall and cause dam age or personal injury. B efore attaching, make sure to check which Home theater sound setup you wa nt to use. 1 • Stac k t he speak ers and fi x wi th the bracke ts. Ea ch sp ea ke r is pr ov id ed w ith a c olo r -c od ed indicator on th e model label on the rear side to assist identifi cation. Refer to the colo r indicators and install the speakers co rrectly. Standard surr ound/Front s urround setup (Fr ont surround mode) : Fro nt su rroun d setu p (Ext ra Po wer m ode ): As shown in the ill ustration, stack the speakers. Align the bracket w ith the respective upper screw hole on the back of the front speaker and fasten the screws securely. Standard surround/Fr ont surround setup (Front surround mode): Front surround setup (Extra Power mode): Caution • Do not attempt to carry the speakers when they are connected w ith the bracket. Do ing so may cause damage to the bracket or worsen dam age to t he bracket an d speakers in the event they are dro pped. Note 1 • Refer to Ho me theater sound set up on page 24 fo r details on how to plac e your speakers. • Standard surround/Front surround setup (F ront surround mode) only - Attaching brackets is necessary only when mount ing center speakers to right and le ft. Before you start 01 9 En Wall-mounting the s peakers CX505 – C enter s peaker, S urround s peakers only CX500 – Front speaker s, Center spe akers, Surr oun d spea kers Depending on the speaker setu p you choose, you can w all- mount th e front , center and surro und speake rs. (W hen using Front surro und setup , you can only wall -mo unt the center speaker.) The illust ration shows the CX505. Before moun ting (see above), keep in mind th e following poi nts: • Rememb er that the speaker system is heavy and that its weigh t could cause the screws to wo rk loose, or the wa ll material to fail to support it, resulting in the speaker falling. Make sure that the wall you intend to mount the speakers on is st rong enough to support them. Do not mount on plyw ood or soft surf ace walls. • Mounting screws ar e not supplied. Use screws suitable for the wa ll material and support the weigh t of the speaker. Caution • If you are unsure of the qualities and strengt h of the w alls, co nsult a pr ofes si ona l for ad vic e. • Pioneer is not responsible for any acciden ts or damage th at result fro m improper in stallatio n. • Subwoofer and (CX303 /CX505 model o nly) front speakers only – Do not attach these speakers to the wall or ceiling. Connecting up 02 10 En Chapter 2 Connecting up Im porta nt • Before making or changing any connections, sw itch off the power and unplug the power cord from the AC outlet. • When making cabl e connect ions, m ake sure not to b end the cables over th e top of this unit . This m ay cause a hu mmi ng nois e from the speak ers. Connecti ng the speaker terminals Connect the wires from the speakers to the terminals on the main unit rear panel as shown be low . Be fore conn ec ting, yo u may wa nt to consider the placement options available in your room, a nd when using this system: 1 • CX303 model o nly – Place the front left and right speakers at equal distan ces from the TV, then connect them as shown below. • CX505/CX 500 model only – A color -c oded system is provided fo r speaker connections (see Multichannel speaker conne ctions bel ow). See Home theater sound setup on page 24 for su rround placement options. Cau ti on • Do not connect this speaker to any amplifier other than the one supplied with this syst em. Connect ion t o a ny oth er ampl ifi er ma y r esu lt in a m alfu n ctio n or fir e. • Make sure that the bar e speaker wires canno t touch e ach ot her, or come in to contact with other metal parts once the unit is switch ed on. • Match t he colo r-code d speak er pl ugs t o the col ored s peake r termi nal s on t he rear of the unit (as s hown below). Make sure to insert completel y. The small lug at the wire-end of the speaker plug should face up or d own depen ding on whether it ’s being plugged into one of the up per or lower three speaker terminals. Please ma ke sure to connect correctly . • CX500 only: The front and surround speaker c ables have a col or-cod ed connec tor at one end and two bare wires at the other end. Note 1 The s peake rs s uppli ed w ith t his s yst em a re ma gnet icall y sh iel ded. Howev er, pla cing t he m ext reme ly c lose t o a t elevi sion may result in col or distorti on on the scr een. If this ha ppens, move the spe ake rs a li ttle fur the r aw ay and s wit ch of f the tele vi sio n for 15 to 30 min utes . Connecting up 02 11 En • Since there is only one terminal to connect the two center spea kers, you will need to use the supplied Y-cable for the connect ion. • Twist and pull of f the protecti ve shields on each wire. • Connect the wires to th e speaker. Each speaker in the illust ration can be identi fied by m eans of the col or-coded in dicat or provided o n the rear -surface mo del label. Match the color-coded wire with the col or indicator on the model label, th en insert the color-coded wire into th e red ( ) side and the other w ire into the black ( – ) side. • When connecting the center speakers, connect the Y-cable dual end to the two center speakers in the same w ay. • When conn ectio ns are com pleted, adjust the cable placements. If t he speakers have been fixed with the bra ckets, fix the cable to the groove in the brackets as shown. • Fasten the cables together with the spiral wra p. Hold multiple cables together and place the wrap o ver the cables from the end. Wrap the spiral w rap with the cables in the center. The spiral wra p may be cut at a d esired length. Connecting up 02 12 En Multichannel speaker con nections CX505/CX5 00 model only Connect each speaker using the color-coded speaker cable. Match them to the colored labels above the speaker term inals (see illustrati on belo w). The illustra tion shows the CX505. Hints on speaker pla cement The following guidelines will help you to get the best performance from your speaker system. Connecting up 02 13 En • Try not to place the surround speak ers further away from the listening position than the front and center speakers. D oing so can weaken the surround sound effect. • Make sure all speakers are installed securely to prevent accid ents and improve sound quality . • Subw oofer and (C X505 mode l only) front speakers on ly – Do not attach these speakers to the wa ll or ceilin g. They m ay fall off and cause injury. Connec ting the ra dio ante nnas Connect ing the suppli ed antennas will al low you to listen to both AM a nd FM radio broa dcast s. If yo u find tha t recep tion qual ity is poor, an outdoor an tenna shou ld give you better so und qualit y — see Connecting e xternal antennas below for mo re on how to do this. 1 Pull off the protecti ve shields of both AM antenna wires. 2 Push open the tabs, then insert one wi re fully into each terminal, then release the tabs to secure the AM antenna wires. 3 Fix the AM loop antenna to the stand. To fix the stand to the antenna, bend in the direction indicated by the arrow ( fig. a ) then cl ip t he l oop on to the st an d ( fig. b ). • If you plan to mount the AM antenna to a wall or other surface, secure th e stand with screws ( fig . c ) before clipping the loop to the stand. Mak e sure the reception is clear. 4 Place the AM antenna on a f lat surface and poin t in the dire ction giv ing the bes t reception. Don’t let it come into contact with metal objec ts and av oid p lacing n ear co mput ers, television sets or other electrical appliances. 5 Connect the FM wire antenna i n the same way as the AM loop ant enna. For best results, extend the FM antenna fully and fix to a wall or doo r frame. Do n’t drape loosely or leave coiled up. If your TV ha s component video inputs, see Co nnecting us ing the component video ou tput bel ow. 1 Use the suppli ed yel low video cable to connec t the VI DEO OUT j ack to a video input on your TV. 2 Optional ly: Use a st ereo aud io cabl e to connec t the audi o outs of your TV (or VCR) to the LINE IN jacks on t he rear of thi s unit. This will enable y ou to hear the TV (or VCR) sound through this sy stem. See Connecting auxiliary components below for mo re on this. Resume and Las t Memory When you stop playback o f a disc, R ESU ME shows in the display indicating that you can resume pla yback from that point. With DV Ds and Video CD /Supe r VCDs, even if ejected, the play position is stored in memory. 2 The next time you load the disc, the display shows LAST M EM and you ca n resume playback. If you want to c lear the resume point, press  (stop) while RESUM E is dis pl ay ed . DVD-Video disc menus Many DVD -Video d iscs conta in menu s from which y ou can se lect what you wa nt to wat ch. Sometimes DVD-Video menu s are displayed automatically when you start playback; others only app ear when you press MENU or TOP MENU ( SHIFT MENU ). Video CD/Super VCD PBC menus Some Video CD/Super VCDs have menus from whi ch you can c hoo se wh at yo u want to wa tch. These are PBC (Playback control) menus. You can p lay a PBC Video CD/Super VC D wit hout ha ving to nav igat e the PBC menu by starting playback using a number b utton to select a track, rather than the  (play) button . Note 1 You may find with some DVD discs that some playback controls don’t work i n certain parts of the disc. Getting started 04 22 En Listening to the rad io The tuner can receive both FM an d AM broadc asts, and lets you mem orize your favor ite s tation s so y ou do n’t h ave t o manua lly tune in every time you want to lis ten (see Memorizing st ations on pag e 23 for more o n this). 1 Pre ss TUNER ( FM/AM ) to switch to the tuner, then press repeatedly to select the A M or FM band. The display shows the ban d and frequency. 2 Tune to a frequency . There are three tuning modes — man ual, auto, and high -speed: • Manua l tuning : Press TU NE /– repeatedly to change the displayed frequency. • Auto tuning : Press and hold TUNE /– until the frequency display starts to move, then release. The tuner will stop on the next station it find s. Repeat to keep searching. • High-speed tuning : P ress and hol d TUNE /– until the frequency display starts to move rapidly. Keep th e button held down until y ou rea ch the fr equency you wa nt. If necessar y, fine tune th e fre quency us ing the manual tuning method. Manually saving s tation presets 1 Tune to an AM or FM radio stati on. Select mono or au to-stereo reception (FM) or the Noise Cu t mode (AM) as necessary. These settings are saved along with the preset. 2 P ress SYS TEM SE TUP and use / to choose ‘ ST.MEM.’ then pr ess ENT ER . 3U s e / to se lec t the s tat ion pre set you want then press ENTER . Automat ically sa ving station pr esets 1 P ress SYS TEM SE TUP , use / to choose ‘ A. P RESET ’ then pr ess ENT ER . Auto tuning starts in the FM band, stopping when a strong signal is received. 2 W hen auto tun ing stops at a stati on, press ENT ER to sav e the sta ti on as a pr eset , or press / to conti nue wi thout savi ng. Auto tuning resumes. After the FM ban d is finish ed, auto tuning con tinues in t he AM band. Press  (stop) anytime to exit. Auto tuning stops automaticall y after the AM band is finished, or after the limit of 30 presets has been reached. W hen this happen s, the tuner automatically switches to preset ST-1 . Disc playback feature s 07 28 En Chapter 7 Disc playback features Im porta nt • Many of the functi ons covered in this chapter apply to DVD discs, Video CDs/ Super VC Ds, CDs, D ivX video and W MA/ MP3/MPEG-4 AAC/JPEG discs, although the exact operation of some va ries slightly with the kind of disc loaded. • Some DVDs restrict the use of some functions (random o r repeat, for examp le) in some or all parts of the disc. This is not a malfunct ion. • Whe n pla ying Vi deo CD /Supe r VCD s, so me of the functions are not available during PBC playback. If you wan t to use them, start th e disc pl aying u sing a nu mber button to select a tr ack. Scanni ng discs You can f ast-scan discs f orward or backward at various different speeds. 1 • During pla yback, press  or  to start scann ing.
